Our Tour Managers
With you every step of the way

GRJ Tour Managers

At the heart of every journey is our team of experienced Tour Managers. They're more than just guides; they're your companions, ensuring that every aspect of your trip runs smoothly. From logistical support to sharing insider knowledge, they're dedicated to making your travel experience stress-free and enriching.

What is the role of a Tour Manager?

From providing advice on the local lingo to guidance on what to pack, a Tour Manager's job covers a wide rang of expertise on a variety of subjects. Here are just a few examples of their multi-faceted role.

Expert knowledge

Valued by our customers for their wide knowledge, our excellent Tour Managers are experts in escorting our customers throughout their holiday. They have often visited locations many times, so know some great insider tips. With their experience of leading tours, it is likely your Tour Manager already has the answer to your question, whether that's about tipping, drinking water or finding great places to eat.

On-the-go support

On a Great Rail Journeys escorted tour, the Tour Manager looks after you throughout your holiday. If a flight or rail connection is missed, for whatever reason, it is their job to get you to where you need to be. There may be a series of interlocking elements to transport that needs to be carefully planned - flights, trains or transfers - so on these occasions a Tour Manager's support is invaluable.

Leave your worries at home

With us, you're never on your own in a foreign country. The Tour Manager handles timing, transport, and smooths over any bumps in the road that may occur. They may have already worked with the local guide, may be familiar with hotels and restaurants, and are likely to understand the rail network. They may also speak the local language or know how to get by with a few phrases.

Travel tips from the experts

Advice on packing

However frequently you travel, packing a suitcase can be a challenge. One Tour Manager's answer to this is packing cubes. "These are soft, nylon mesh bags in various shapes and sizes. Put underwear in one, T-shirts in another, and so on. You lay them out flat in your suitcase, so they interlock.  On arrival, extract items for the next day. Hang them up and you're good to go but your suitcase remains ready for departure. A useful tip for creased clothes is to put them on a clothes hanger and hang them up in the bathroom. After a hot shower, allow them to steam in the bathroom for 10 minutes."

Airlines & upgrades

A common question Tour Managers are asked by customers is 'How do I get a free upgrade on flights?' As one TM puts it: "The truth is, upgrades are as rare as unicorns. Airlines will rarely give away for free something so valuable. That said, it does happen occasionally, and there is one thing you can do that works to help. If you're not already in the Airline Frequent Flyer scheme, sign up for the scheme in advance and you're in with a fighting chance. If nothing comes up, you are still claiming points and one day you may have enough to use on something nice."

Travelling from St Pancras

Great Rail Journeys has the advantage of an office right inside London St Pancras station. It's a useful hub for customers to meet Tour Managers and the team there provide assistance and information. Besides answering questions, the St Pancras team can advise on getting through the Eurostar process. The office is conveniently located opposite Marks & Spencer so it's handy for picking up items for your trip.

When to arrive

While it's tempting to arrive two or three hours prior to departure, there's not much to do at the station for that long, especially for early morning departures. "At 5am it can be cold, empty and gloomy. I suggest arriving no earlier than 90 minutes before departure. Eurostar often won't allow passengers to proceed into the lounge until 60 minutes before departure. So, it's not advisable to arrive too early!"
