Exploring the world for more than 50 years

The Great Rail Journeys story

For more than 50 years, we've been curating exceptional escorted tours with exciting itineraries to remarkable destinations. Since our first-ever tour to marvel at the pyramids of Egypt in 1973, we have been using our award-winning travel expertise and outstanding customer service to deliver moments of great connection for thousands of customers.

Following in Pharaohs' footsteps

In 1973, our founders Ian Macbeth and Peter Henry put together their very first rail tour. Inspired by the 'Treasures of Tutankhamun' exhibition at the British Museum, the pair planned an epic 21-day overland tour to Egypt.

Ian and Peter guided our first three customers, Charles, Bruce and Ron, across Europe to Greece. Crossing the Mediterranean by boat, the group reached Egypt.

Visiting the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, the travellers explored the country's best sights and a love for escorted tours was born. Over the past half a century, we have led tours to all continents, using our knowledge and passion to show our customers a world of wonders.

Our history

From five people embarking on an epic adventure to Egypt in 1973 to taking 40,000 customers on unforgettable holidays all across the globe in 2024, our own journey has been one of passion and vision. We're proud of where we've come from, where we are and where we're looking to go in the future.

1973 – How It All Began

British Rail colleagues Ian Macbeth and Peter Henry run their first tour, travelling over land and sea to Egypt on 13th Sept 1973. As advertised in Rail News, Macs Tours is born. At the time, British Rail staff were entitled to many discounts on foreign rail travel. Over the next few years, Macs Tours goes on to organise semi-formal holidays for fellow employees, taking 13 customers to Marrakech in 1974, followed by Scandinavia a year later. Russia, Canada and the USA were added to the roster in 1976, before taking their first customers to Switzerland in 1977.

In 1979, Macs Tours moves from London to York.

1980s – Broadening Our Horizons

By now a semi-professional side project, Macs Tours welcomes another railway expert, Howard Trinder, to its ranks. Trinder's connections allows Macs Tours to expand its client base and launch a new range of escorted tours to destinations including Austria, Italy and Hungary. As the decade draws to a close, privatisation hangs in the air. Macbeth and Trinder soon find themselves out of a day job and decide to turn their hobby into a full-time business - expanding their customer base from British Rail employees to the wider public. This concept proves increasingly popular, and the duo never look back.

The first tour to China takes place in 1987, with India following in 1989.

1990s – York Becomes Our Permanent Home

Moving to permanent business premises in the centre of historic York makes 1991 a landmark year for Macs Tours. The company grows, using more Tour Managers and expanding the programme of tours to Australia. In 1994, the first Eurostar service operates between London and Paris, making rail travel to Europe easier. We launch our first tour to Africa, while New Zealand is added to our itineraries a year later.

In 1996, Macs Tours is renamed Great Rail Journeys.

2001-2004 – River Cruises and Japan Tours Are Launched

In 2001, Great Rail Journeys establishes itself in the cruise sector by launching its first tour down the Rhine in Germany, and we take our first customers on to Japan in 2003. Great Rail Journeys becomes a founding member of the Amber Travel Partnership in 2004, alongside independent specialist tour operator, Inntravel. The group is formed with the view of bringing further like-minded and owner-managed travel brands into the group.

2005-2009 – A Landmark Year and Continued Expansion

The company that began with five British Rail workers taking friends on an Egyptian adventure has grown into an operator taking more than 20,000 customers on tour for the first time. Fifty Tour Managers lead customers on adventures all across the world. In September 2005, the Amber Travel Partnership is bought by independent private equity firm Primary Capital.

Great Rail Journeys launches a new subsidiary programme in 2006. The aim of RailSelect.com is to provide rail holidays for the independent traveller rather than escorted group travel that had previously formed the main part of GRJ's product.

Treyn Holidays is launched in 2008. This new brand offers affordable escorted group holidays to the most beautiful parts of Europe. Inntravel is sold to Inghams in February, while GRJ launches a dedicated product for solo travellers in October.

November sees us scoop the Grand Prix at the annual York Press Business Awards, as well as Growth Business of the Year. Yet more rail-based holidays are introduced in 2009, including festive tours and UK-based holidays that showcase some of the British Isles' finest scenery.

2010-2015 – Becoming a Market Leader

The expansion continues into the European and Worldwide sector in 2010. A new programme of 'Fly Rail' tours is introduced as well as exciting new destinations including Peru and Namibia. Three new websites are launched to support Great Rail Journeys' expanding River Cruise programme, USA rail tours and Christmas Markets breaks.

The Great Rail Journeys group becomes the UK's leading operator of holidays by rail in 2012. More than 100 people work at the company headquarters in York while in excess of 250 Tour Managers escort over 1,800 tours. More than 50,000 customers travel with us this year. Private equity firm ECI Partners acquires a major stake in Great Rail Journeys in 2013. The number of Tour Managers reaches 300 - a growth of 250 in just eight years. In May 2014, a range of independent holidays is launched to offer greater freedom to customers who want to travel individually. Following consultation with our valued customers, Treyn is rebranded as Rail Discoveries in August.

Great Rail Journeys wins Best Rail Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards in 2015, an honour it would repeat the following year - as well as receiving Best Escorted Tour Operator at the Times Travel Awards.

2016-2020 – Welcoming Vacations By Rail

The company continues to pioneer rail adventures by launching a special Around the World in 51 Days tour - an inspiring undertaking recalling the spirit of its founders. ECI Partners sells its stake in Great Rail Journeys to Duke Street Capital in 2018. Vacations By Rail, a Chicago-based tour operator, joins the Great Rail Journeys family in 2019, increasing the group's reach into the US market.

A programme of exclusively chartered river cruises is also launched on European rivers.

2022 – A New Home for GRJ

In 2022, Great Rail Journeys makes the move to its new headquarters at the Hudson Quarter on the former site of York's original railway station. More than 130 staff work are now employed in the UK office, with 40 in Chicago and over 380 Tour Managers.

2023 – A Year of Award Wins

Multiple accolades are presented to Great Rail Journeys as it wins Best Escorted Tour Operator at the Times Travel Awards, the Telegraph's Best Rail Operator award and Best Rail Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards.

2024 – Improving Our Collections

Rail Discoveries is merged into Great Rail Journeys, providing a single home for all our tour products and giving the customers an improved selection of holidays. We also continued to win awards as we were honoured to receive Best Guided Adventure Operator at the Times Travels Awards and Best Travel Company for Rail Holidays at the British Travel Awards.

In December, we also became a Which? Recommended Provider for Escorted Tours.
