Ofoten Railway from Kiruna and Gallivare to Narvik

The Ofoten Railway lies on a headland at the foot of the Fagernesfjellet, between the Beisfjord and Rornbaksfjord, and runs between the iron-ore mines at Kiruna in Swedish Lapland and the port town of Narvik on the Norwegian coast. The modern town of Narvik was developed as a port for the export of the iron-ore, and the Ofoten Railway, was built at the turn of the century as the link between the mines and the port.

At the time of construction, the Ofoten Railway was both the coldest and northern-most railway project in the world. The 26-mile (42km) line was painstakingly carved out the mountains - an incredible engineering project that was largely undertaken by hand. The result is a breathtaking route which takes passengers past deep fjords, through the wild, rugged mountains and the barren mountain plateaus north of the Arctic Circle.

The Ofoten Railway Museum is dedicated to the local history of Narvik and the Ofoten Railway, and is located close to the centre of Narvik.

“Overall a fantastic holiday with a great variety of trips and activities. We enjoyed all the itinerary but highlights included the Ice Hotel- really an ice art gallery - and husky sled ride. The scenery was stunning from coach and trains - especially in the Lofoten Islands. Our great tour guide Charles was a lot of fun and our skilful driver Sergei kept an immaculate coach. The buffet breakfasts were super, however, there was no choice of meals and Camp Ripan served the same vegetarian main meal on both evenings that diner was included. The group was larger than expected at 41. We travelled from and to Manchester and there was less than an hour between connecting flights at Oslo and Stockholm. We missed our connecting flight to Trondheim and had to rush between gates at Stockholm in order to catch our flight to Manchester. To reduce the risk of missing connecting flights from and to Manchester, It’s worth considering booking a later onward flight from Oslo to Trondheim (we flew an hour later), an earlier flight from Kiruna to Stockholm or even staying overnight in Stockholm and getting a Manchester flight the following day.

“Great trip. Most of the hotels were excellent. Tour guide excellent. Oslo hotel our least favourite. Some of group felt we had too many coach trips. Flam railway our favourite of the entire holiday.
