1880 Train

Recall the nostalgia of the 1800s, when gold was king, and westward expansion was a new and exciting prospect aboard the aptly named  1880 Train. Operated by the  Black Hills Central Railroad, this scenic train line meanders through South Dakota's gold country, following a route charted originally by the  Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad  in 1890. The  1880 Train is not quite so old, built in 1957 to cater to historians and sightseers alike. Each 2-hour ride through the Black Hills recalls the tales of long ago while presenting glimpses at granite mountains, coniferous forests, and old mining towns.

California Zephyr

From the heart of the Midwest to the stunning Pacific coast, the California Zephyr reveals the ever-changing landscapes of the United States, one mile at a time. This is one of the most popular of Amtrak's overnight rail journeys, traveling from  Chicago, IL, to Emeryville, CA, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The route encompasses over 2,400 miles and includes fantastic views of the Rocky and Sierra Nevada Mountains, Byers and Glenwood Canyons, the deserts of Utah, San Pablo Bay, and many other scenes that can only be captured from the rails.

It was a wonderful trip, with the tour guide Sally Bell and bus driver Alex Hess being the best part. . All the museums, animals, and scenery were fantastic. The raft trip on the Snake River and the jeep ride through Custer State Park were the best parts of the trip. The weakest part of the tour was the California Zephyr train. The observation deck was great and the food was good, but the roomette was too small, the train too jerky, and the whole train showing that it was in need of a good cleaning. But we loved the trip and thought it was an awesome itinerary. Thank you.
