Moselle

Moselle River Cruises

Tiered banks rising from serene waters, the Moselle is one of the most northerly wine regions in the world and is celebrated for its internationally-acclaimed vintages. And there's much more to celebrate about this historic part of the world, whether that's its proximity to the Duchy of Luxembourg, one of Europe's wealthiest and smallest countries, the Roman heritage of Trier or the Gothic Reichsburg of Cochem. And once the Moselle joins the Rhine, treats such as Rüdesheimer Kaffee, served with local brandy and sugar, are irresistible and the perfect way to immerse yourself in regional traditions.

Highlights of the Moselle
Luxembourg

Luxembourg City

As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg exudes class and elegance. Uncover a unique blend of German and French culture and architecture as you explore Luxembourg City - a storybook example of a capital city that sits majestically perched on a cliffside, watching over the deep, green-forested valley below.

Trier

Trier

The whole of Trier is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and with so much to discover in its plazas and bustling streets, this comes as little surprise. Thought to be Germany's oldest city, Trier is rife with ancient Roman ruins, which occupy the same street corner as classic Baroque architecture and brightly coloured town-houses to leave us with a truly historic treasure trove of sights to see.

Wine

Wines of the Moselle

Such vintages can only be made from grapes grown alongside the Moselle River, with the most common variety, Reisling, a popular choice. Ranging from very sweet to dry, and with a distinctive yellow tinge, enjoy sampling this delicious local specialty at different destinations along the Moselle.

Rudesheim

Rüdesheim by night

As the sun sets and visitors start to disperse, wander the historic streets of Rüdesheim and see this fairytale town in a completely different light. For the perfect finish, afterwards relax with a delicious cup of traditional Rüdesheimer Kaffee. Invented by a German television chef in 1957, it's served with local brandy and sugar in a specially-designed cup.

Koblenz

Koblenz

Situated at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Koblenz takes its name from its position at their 'confluence'. The modern town has ancient roots that go all the way back to the Romans, who established a strategic settlement and military stronghold here in about 8 BC. The city also marks the northern end of the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As such, there are plenty of impressive views across the beautiful surroundings to be enjoyed from the town. You can also admire the beautifully preserved Old Town and popular river promenades, as well as the 'Deutsches Eck' monument.

Cochem

Cochem

Situated in the Moselle Valley, Cochem is surrounded by vineyards, while the town itself, in particular its Old Quarter, boasts a number of historic attractions. Dominated by the Late-Gothic castle, the Reichsburg, this area's also home to a preserved mustard mill, the only surviving example of its kind on the whole continent, and a walkable section of the original medieval walls. For something slightly different, you'll find a fascinating arts centre housed in Cochem's former monastery.

The Magic of the Moselle and Rhine

“Railway journey out not great courier unaware of my problem with escalators although I had informed Great Rail Ahead. Brussels Midi became a nightmare. Ship was great love the standard of the Amedaus Staff meals etc. There was conflict between information from ship and tour manager. the walking tours were too tiring for us both duration and amount of standing. No time for proper breaks during these tours. Guides consistently underestimated the time that they would take. Tour to Luxembourg on a Sunday was very problematic!!! Places were very interesting would have loved much more time in Trier with a good map by ourselves.
