About the tour

Enjoy all the New Year cheer that Yorkshire has to offer from the beautiful spa town of Harrogate. This festive holiday includes fantastic rail journeys through the moors and Pennines, visits to picturesque Fountains Abbey and the medieval city of York, as well as a celebratory gala dinner.

What’s included

Day 1 - Harrogate

Make your way to Harrogate and meet your Tour Manager at the hotel. You're then free in the spa town of Harrogate, which boasts a scenic location in the heart of North Yorkshire's Nidd Valley. Harrogate is home to beautiful parks and an abundance of historic buildings, including the town's famous spa. If you want to relax, you could plan a visit to the Victorian-era Turkish Baths, do some shopping at one of the many independent boutiques or enjoy a stroll around the wintry Valley Gardens ahead of dinner.

  • Dinner
Day 2 – North York Moors Railway

We travel by coach to Pickering, where we board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Offering a nostalgic journey through the beautiful North York Moors National Park, we travel along a route dating back to the 1800s, which runs through one of the oldest railway tunnels in the world and brings to life the eerily desolate, heather-strewn landscapes that pass by our window. We savour an unforgettable Christmas Moorlander lunch on board, making way through elegant sandstone towns and wild, untamed countryside before returning to Pickering and transferring back to our hotel.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 - York

We catch the train to York this for a fascinating guided tour of its ancient sights, including the 12th-century Gothic Minster and the medieval Shambles, all decked out in festive fairy lights. The rest of your day is free and you might like to visit the city's renowned museums, such as Jorvik, which gives in-depth insight into York's Viking past, or the National Railway Museum.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 – The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

Today is New Year's Eve, and we travel by coach to Ingrow. After seeing the Ingrow locomotive museum, we continue to Keighley aboard the heritage Keighley and Worth Valley train. Originally constructed in 1867 by wealthy mill owners in the area, the Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway runs through the Worth Valley to Oxenhope. The line features original rolling stock from the early 20th century, all of which has been beautifully restored. After our scenic ride through the brooding Pennines, we transfer by coach to the Brontë Parsonage Museum, housed in the original family home and boasting a range of their personal possessions, as well as an exhibit on how they lived and worked. In the evening, we're treated to a gala buffet New Year's dinner at our hotel.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 – Harrogate

Enjoy a free day to explore Harrogate, perhaps making a stop at Bettys famous tea rooms further or heading slightly further afield to stunning Knaresborough or the RHS gardens at Harlow Carr. In the afternoon, we're treated to a traditional high tea at the hotel ahead of dinner.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - Fountains Abbey

We take an enjoyable excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey. Set within a beautiful estate, these are the largest monastic ruins in the country and you're free to explore the atmospheric grounds, home to red deer, otters and mountain hares, before we return to the hotel.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7 – Homeward bound

Our New Year holiday comes to an end today and you're free to depart Harrogate in your own time.

Enjoyed the excursions but was disappointed with the Hotel, particularly the New years eve "Gala" dinner. It was a poor carvery with everything cold and the entertainment was just a mediocre disco. There was nothing "Gala" about the evening!

Our hotel alternative was a huge disappointment the Old Swan was so much better. Underground dining and bar with no lounge greatly different to our origional choice. Room was comfortable but with dated decor. Poor wardrobe space an issue. Food was limited choice resulting in us dining out on 2 occasions however breakfast was excellent every day. Staff were excellent and made our holiday enjoyable. Paying for parking an issue despite it being free in original hotel. No safe? Even though advertised with one
