We continue our journey by rail (Standard Class) this morning, travelling across Germany, through the breathtaking snow-capped mountains of Austria and across the border to Slovenia. Our destination is Lake Bled, undoubtedly Slovenia's most sought-after and romantic alpine resort. The showpiece of this pretty area is the little white church on the island in the centre of Lake Bled. The majestic scenery is classic 'picture postcard' - an emerald lake fed by glacier waters and hot springs, made all the more striking with the snowy Julian Alps as the backdrop. We spend four nights in Bled at the fabulous 5-star Grand Hotel Toplice.

A day at leisure discovering Bled

Today you are free to discover Lake Bled at your leisure. Take a walk around the lake for stunning views or maybe visit Bled Castle, a fantastic example of how architecture develops over the ages. Featuring a Roman centre, medieval towers and Renaissance defence walls, it offers visitors a chance to peek into the past, and it commands a dominant location, perched on a rock rising 100 metres above the lake. Alternatively, simply spend the day enjoying the hotel's wonderful facilities and prime location, which offers unrivalled vistas across the lake and towards the mountains.

Day 4

Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle

Today we embark on a guided coach excursion to the Postojna Caves, which feature more than 12 miles of sculpted caverns and glistening stalactite formations. First discovered in the 17th century, the fascinating caves have delighted visitors for more than 200 years. We enter the labyrinth of caverns on a small electric railway, before taking a walk through the larger caverns to the heart of the caves. After some free time for lunch, we continue on to Predjama Castle, traditionally the home of Trieste's Imperial Governors. This fortress was initially built in the 13th century and renovated in the Renaissance period. Famous for defying a military siege for an entire year, the rear façade of the castle is carved into solid bedrock, preventing attacks from nearly all sides.

Dominated by its imposing castle, Ljubljana is filled with a relaxed charm that reflects its rich history as a central European powerhouse. The city's very centre is beautiful - boasting a mix of delightful Art Nouveau and Baroque architecture - and the delightful pedestrianised Old Town is easily explored on foot. Following a guided sightseeing tour, you are free to perhaps take the funicular railway up to Ljubljana Castle, which offers impressive views over the city. Day 7

A walking tour of Venice

Today we enjoy a guided tour of Venice, including the magnificent St Mark's Square, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful city squares in the world. Overlooked by St Mark's Basilica, the large open space is surrounded by the Doge's Palace, the Procurator's residence, the famous Sansoviniana Bookshop and the iconic bell tower, as well as the waters of the lagoon. Our local guide takes us on a walking tour of the city, leading us around the narrow streets and small squares to visit some of Venice's main sights, including the famous Rialto Bridge, completed in 1591 and an architectural gem that spans the Grand Canal. For the rest of the day you are free to explore this truly amazing city at leisure. Venice lends itself to idle wandering so the best way to soak up the atmosphere is to simply let yourself get lost in the myriad of twisting lanes and alleys. Alternatively, another option is a visit to one of the islands in the northern lagoon - watch one of the master glass-blowers at work in Murano, stroll past the brightly coloured houses to the lace museum in Burano, or pass a relaxing hour or so in tranquil Torcello. Otherwise, why not indulge yourself by visiting one of the many art collections in the city? The Gallerie dell'Accademia, for example, holds magnificent masterpieces by Bellini, Canaletto and Tintoretto.

Day 8

The spectacular Venice Carnival

Today is free for you to experience the truly magnificent spectacle that is Venice Carnival, the traditions of which can be traced back to the 14th century. Marvel at the wonderful array of costumes and masks on display in this fantastic festival and be entertained by jugglers, singers, dancers and all kinds of performers throughout the city. In line with carnival tradition, masks, hoods, capes and tricorn hats contribute to the anonymity of festival goers, hiding the social status of the often cloaked wearer. Much effort is made with the costumes and the other decorations, resulting in a fantastic explosion of colour across the scenic city centre. Venice has a totally different feel during the carnival, with much of the activity centred on St Mark's Square, and the glorious celebrations only serve to enhance the city's incredible atmosphere.
