Traditional Glacier Express at Christmas
NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT*
This captivating Christmas rail tour combines stunning train journeys across the snow-covered roof of the Alps to tranquil Poschiavo and bustling Zermatt, with time in Switzerland's oldest town, Chur, and the mountain resort of Kandersteg.
We meet in St Pancras at our dedicated Departure Office, before taking the Eurostar to Paris. Changing trains, we travel to Strasbourg. Here, you can explore the historical centre on Day 2 before we travel to Kandersteg, our base for the next three nights.
Today, we travel to Zermatt on the narrow-gauge train from Brig, through dramatic valleys to Visp. From here, we join the mountain track for the steep ascent to Zermatt, through 8 tunnels and across 42 bridges. On arrival in the charming, car-free resort of Zermatt, you are at leisure to explore. Day 4 is also at leisure, so why not use your GRJ Swiss Travel Card for reduced fares on boats and trains to explore your surroundings?
On Christmas Eve, we travel through the Lötschberg tunnel and over the Kasnder Viaduct to Brig. Here, we board the Glacier Express - known as the 'slowest express train in the world' - from the Valais region to the rocky landscapes of the Graubünden canton. We ascend gently up through the Rhône Valley and through the Furka Base Tunnel, climbing past small villages lining our route. We climb steadily then steeply as we make our way up and over the snowy Oberalp Pass, the highest point of our route at 6,670ft. Finally, we descend into the Rhine Valley and reach Chur, where we spend three nights.
Today is Christmas Day, and you are at leisure to explore the delightful town of Chur, or to simply relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere in the hotel before our Christmas Gala Dinner this evening.
Our Boxing Day excursion takes us on the Bernina Express to Poschiavo. The railway line is over 100 years old and has been awarded with UNESCO World Heritage status. We travel through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges, including the Landwasser Viaduct. Looping and spiralling through the rugged landscape of the Engadine Valley, our ascent takes us through the Albula Tunnel and over the Bernina Pass. In Poschiavo, we have time for lunch before making the return journey back to Chur.
Today, we bid a fond farewell to Chur and depart for Basel, where we transfer to Paris. From here, we board the Eurostar back to London.
Please note that while every departure of this tour will feature the same excursions, the order may differ from that shown above.
