It was here in Mainz that the first books were printed with a movable type printing press. Alternatively, you can spend this time at leisure and explore at your own pace. Day 5

We arrive in the Swiss city of Basel today, a charming northwestern hub and one of the nation's most iconic locations. Here you have the choice between exploring at leisure or joining a guided tour around the many attractions and cultural landmarks, such as the impressive array of late Romanesque and early Gothic buildings. Divided by the mighty Rhine, Basel comprises 19 quarters, each with their own individual ambience and flavour. However, it is the old medieval quarters of Grossbasel and Kleinbasel that are certainly the most interesting. Situated on the south bank of the Rhine, the atmospheric streets of Grossbasel are the jewel in the crown. Here, you can immerse yourself in the history of the town as you wander through the market squares and the winding narrow lanes. The city also boasts a wealth of museums and galleries dedicated to a host of topics ranging from music to the Swiss artist, Tinguely.

Day 6

This morning we arrive in Breisach, a fortified hill town at the Rhine's edge. On arrival, you could join an optional walking tour of Breisach, a picturesque wine-producing town filled with charming 16th century buildings. After the guided tour, there is a chance to taste some of the region's produce and a delicious selection of local sparkling wines.

Day 7

Having passed through the famous Rhine Gorge, we arrive in Koblenz this afternoon, where there is an optional guided tour. Situated at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Koblenz takes its name from its position at their 'confluence.' The modern town has ancient roots that go all the way back to the Romans, who established a strategic settlement and military stronghold here in about 8 BC. In later years, the Archbishop-Electors of Trier moved their court here, and under their influence Koblenz was expanded in a Neo-Classical style by the late 18th century. They also built the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Completed in 1832, the fortress was never attacked and today the magnificent complex houses a fantastic museum with exhibits on the region's history. As well as being one of Koblenz's best-loved attractions, the fortress also affords a wonderful panorama over the town and the rivers.
