Day 1

London to Zurich

Our journey into the winter wonderland scenery of Switzerland begins at London Heathrow, where we meet the rest of our group and Tour Manager. We board our direct flight to Zurich, transferring on arrival to the railway station, which is just below the airport itself. Here we take the train to our base for the duration of our holiday, Kandersteg, travelling via Bern. Located in the fantastic Bernese Oberland, Kandersteg is a delightful winter mountain resort, popular with skiers, hikers, ramblers, cyclists and climbers. Originally just a small farming village, Kandersteg has developed into a thriving Alpine destination and our home for the next five nights is the Hotel Bernerhof, in the heart of the village. As darkness falls we head out into the crisp, cool air to experience an atmospheric walk around Kandersteg, illuminated by flickering torchlight. The gentle glow lights our way as we begin to explore under the cloak of darkness, reflecting off the snow and giving the experience an ethereal quality. Afterwards we are treated to a glass of mulled wine, warming us with its delicious spices.

Day 2

Discovering Kandersteg in the snow

Wrapping up warm, we head out for a day of sightseeing in some truly exciting and unique ways. We begin by donning a set of snow shoes for a guided walking tour of the town with a difference. As we immerse ourselves in the winter landscapes of this beautiful Alpine location we get to experience what for many will be a new way of sightseeing.

Dating back around 6,000 years, snow shoes have been, and still are, a necessary piece of winter equipment for many rural communities, allowing them to source food and fuel over the cold winter months. These days their design has evolved somewhat from the traditional wooden frames, and now they provide greater support and comfort. The feeling of using snowshoes can be quite peculiar to start with, as the expectation is to sink into the drifts instead of being able to walk steadily across them, but as we are escorted around Kandersteg, learning all about the town's origins and the boom brought by the tourist industry, we will soon get used to the sensation, enjoying the ease with which we are able to get around. We take it easy for our next excursion, boarding an old-fashioned Swiss style sleigh for a relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride around Kandersteg. Hunker down under the covers that help keep you cosy as you watch the frost-bitten, snow-laden landscapes slide past you, travelling via one of the oldest forms of transport in the world.

We return to the hotel in time for dinner tonight, allowing us to relive the exciting events of the day.

Day 3

The Schilthorn

We travel by train to the picturesque mountain village of Mürren today. Situated high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 5,413 ft (1,650m) above sea level, this chocolate-box village is a popular tourist destination all year round, thanks to the incredible mountain views it offers; in winter in particular it is alive with activity. After arriving in the traffic-free village, we continue further into the mountains by cable car, ascending through the spectacular scenery to the peak of the mighty Schilthorn. Once at the summit, you can take in the superb views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains; on a clear day there is a wonderful panorama of a further two hundred peaks. Here you can also visit Piz Gloria, which was the world's first revolving restaurant and was made famous in the James Bond film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service.' Return to Kandersteg in your own time; perhaps taking the opportunity to look around Mürren before catching the train back in time for dinner.

Cross Country Skiing
Day 4

Cross-country skiing and curling

Today we have the opportunity to enjoy another two delightful winter activities popular in this part of the world. We begin our education with a curling lesson at the local ice rink, learning all about the sport that has been surprisingly popular at each Winter Olympics. Expert help will be on hand to demonstrate and explain the rules. Afterwards we indulge in some delicious Swiss hot chocolate to reward all our hard efforts. This afternoon we continue with an optional cross-country skiing lesson, helping us to master the relaxed, gliding stride technique. This is a glorious way to take in the countryside surrounding Kandersteg and perfect for beginners and those with previous experience alike. An instructor will be on hand to guide you in the basics before you have the chance to put your newly discovered skills to the test.

Day 5

Today we experience a superb mountain railway journey as we travel to the charming, car-free resort of Zermatt. We take the train to Brig, where we board our narrow-gauge train, heading south through picturesque vineyards and alongside the River Rhône to Visp. From here we join the mountain track for the steep ascent to Zermatt. The train clings to the track as we wind left and right, ascending past small clusters of houses and tiny hamlets that together form the region's village communities. The spectacular approach takes us through 8 tunnels and across 42 bridges, the gradient of the ascent requiring cogwheels to be engaged. Finally we reach the grandiose scenery of Zermatt, tucked below the tilted peak of the instantly recognisable Matterhorn. In Zermatt you are free to spend your time as you choose. One option not to be missed is the ascent to the summit of the Gornergrat by funicular railway (supplement payable locally). At over 10,000 feet (3,048m), the Gornergrat is a truly spectacular place to visit in winter, offering dramatic vistas over the valley below.
