Take two steam-hauled train journeys into the countryside aboard the Severn Valley Railway and Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. Visit Warwick Castle and celebrate in the heart of England on this festive rail holiday.
Your tour starts as you meet your Tour Manager at the Arden Hotel, which enjoys an ideal location in the heart of this historic Warwickshire town.
We head to Kidderminster by coach to board one of the vintage steam-hauled trains of the Severn Valley Railway. Travelling in restored carriages, we make our way through the countryside of Worcestershire and Shropshire on a round trip to Arley. Later we continue to medieval Warwick Castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1068. Here you have time to explore the castle's many exhibits, as well as the gardens and ramparts which offer beautiful views over the wintry landscape.
This morning we embark on a guided tour of Stratford-upon-Avon, the hometown of William Shakespeare. We take in some of the town's most important sites including Shakespeare's birthplace, Harvard house, and Holy Trinity Church - the bard's final resting place - before an afternoon at leisure. You may like to visit Stratford's butterfly farm, a tropical enclosure that lets you experience these delicate creatures close up. Later this afternoon you will have afternoon tea. Later you could attend Midnight Mass; sherry and mince pies are available on your return.
Today is about relaxation and festive fare. After a relaxed morning we enjoy a champagne and canape reception traditional before a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, then a light buffet supper tonight.
Our Boxing Day excursion takes us to Toddington, where we join the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway for a steam-hauled journey through the Cotswolds. On our return you could go to see Anne Hathaway's cottage on the outskirts of town which dates back to the 15th century. Mary Arden's house, owned by Shakespeare's grandparents, is also well worth a look. Tonight, we enjoy an early dinner ahead of one of the highlights of our tour, an evening at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
After breakfast this morning, your tour concludes and you are free to depart at your leisure.
