Ribble Steam Railway

This morning we transfer by coach to take an enchanting ride on the Heritage Ribble Steam Railway. A standard gauge preserved line that was opened to the public on the 17th September 2005. The journey is a three mile return trip which includes crossing a unique dock swing bridge and then along the banks of the attractive River Ribble, from here you can see the city of Preston. The railway also features a 'hands on' museum. After our time here we move onwards to meet our fantastic ship, the Magellan. We have time to get settled in aboard before we begin our cruising adventure. We enjoy dinner aboard ship for the first time this evening.

We sail to Tobermory today on the Isle of Mull, our first port of call. We enjoy the stunning scenery as we pass into the Sound of Mull, cruising serenely with the rugged and dramatic landscape of the Inner Hebrides firmly in our sights. We eventually arrive in Tobermory, the capital of the Isle of Mull located to the north of the island. Tobermory is instantly recognisable by its colourfully painted town houses on the harbour front. We moor here for the day giving you a fantastic opportunity to explore the town and immerse yourself in the atmospheric scenery of the isle.

Day 5

The Orkney Islands

We sail past the Orkney archipelago and arrive in the capital Kirkwall today. Your time here is at leisure providing ample opportunity to explore the surrounding environs or to simply spend your time in Kirkwall itself. You could choose to visit Scapa Flow, the home base for the British Grand Fleet in WW1 and again one of the Royal Navy's main stations in the Second World War, due to its relatively safe distance from the nearest Luftwaffe base, providing a safe haven for the moored warships. As a thriving market town Kirkwall is sure to have something to please everyone, with plenty of opportunities to sample the local produce from the town's shops or market stalls. After our time in Kirkwall we re-board our ship and continue sailing towards the Faroe Islands.

The Faroe Islands

This morning we reach Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands' vibrant capital. We arrive in Invergordon today, a town in the Scottish Highlands. Invergordon was made famous by one of the few open mutinies in Royal Naval history. In 1931 industrial action took place and as a result over a thousand sailors went on strike for two days due to pay cuts in public spending. Invergoron is home to a whisky distillery run by Whyte and Mackay. You enjoy time here at leisure allowing you to explore all the town has to offer.
