Day 2 Munich

Exploring Munich and to Oberammergau

Our first full day in Germany begins with time at leisure to explore Munich. Offering up a tempting menu of spectacular religious architecture, elegant streets and enough vibrant Bavarian culture to fill a stein glass, this city has a treasure trove of charms to pick from. Why not take the opportunity to delve into the religious, cultural and political significance of Munich as the Bavarian capital? With such sites as the famous Marienplatz, heart of the city since 1158, and the ever-impressive Hofbrauhaus, a classic and lively example of the iconic German beer hall, there is much here to uncover.

Munich's glorious Frauenkirche, a Gothic cathedral with a pair of striking domed towers that stand guard over the terracotta roofs below, is a sight not to be missed. This magnificent edifice dates back to the 15th century, built on an old Romanesque church Inside, the Frauenkirche boasts a sumptuous interior made up of tall arches and priceless artworks. Intriguingly, at the porch of the Frauenkirche is a footstep shaped mark known as the Devil's Footprint, made supposedly by the devil as he stood outside to contemplate the windowless church.

After some free time for lunch, we leave Munich and travel by local rail (Standard Class) through some truly sublime German countryside to the small town of Oberammergau, hidden away in the attractive Ammergau region. We pass deep green forest straight from a Brothers Grimm fairytale, as well as rolling foothills and shimmering rivers. On arrival into Oberammergau, we check into our hotel.

After dinner, a unique experience awaits as we sit down to a talk from the actor who has and will play Jesus in the 2010 and 2020 performances of the famed Oberammergau Passion Play. This wonderful theatrical production, detailing the final days of Jesus Christ and staged only once every ten years, put Oberammergau firmly on the map as a town of major religious importance. The play sees the entire populace of the village come together as cast members, artists and crew, to create something truly special.

The origins of the Passion Play famously come from the 16th century when a vicious plague was sweeping Europe. The inhabitants of Oberammergau, fearing the destruction of their village, prayed to God and promised that if he saved their lives that they would celebrate by performing a play every ten years. When their village survived the plague, the villagers honoured their pledge and every decade since 1634 has seen the play performed.

Jesus' actor from the 2010 Passion Play takes us behind the scenes with a fascinating talk about his time in the play's starring role that details the immense amount of effort and talent which goes into every single performance.

Day 3 Discovering Oberammergau
Discovering Oberammergau

Discovering Oberammergau

Today we head out into Oberammergau on a guided tour. The town is a very pretty example of a classic Bavarian town, hidden away among the majestic peaks of the Bavarian Alps.

We see the half-timbered houses decorated with delightful Lüftlmalerei-style paintings of religious scenes, before crossing the Ammer river and continuing to the passion play stage, where we delve backstage to find out more about this stunning spectacle and the people behind it. This tour offers a rare look into a very special event. Afterwards you are free; Oberammergau is also famous for its wood-carving traditions, perhaps spend some time admiring the woodwork across the town's architecture.

Day 4 Linderhof Palace
Linderhof Palace

Into Bavaria

We head out into Bavaria proper today to explore some of its memorable sights. Travelling by coach, we pass under the gaze of ancient mountains on our way to the Church of Wies. This remarkable church is interesting because of the fact that no one really knows why such a beautiful building is tucked away in an unremarkable area. Its magnificent halls are classic examples of Bavarian Rococo architecture, featuring ornate and curved stonework, vibrant and luxurious colours and shimmering golden furnishings. It's been a church of pilgrimage ever since the neighbouring hamlet experienced a miracle when tears appeared on a wooden figure of Christ, and its significance earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1983.

We continue on to the majestic Linderhof Palace, an amazing schloss, or palace, built by King Ludwig II who also built the nearby Neuschwanstein fortress. Modelled on the famous palace at Versailles, Linderhof Palace boasts fantastic Rococo interiors of gold and white as well as extensive gardens, all decorated to the tastes of the eccentric king.

  • Breakfast
Day 5 Cologne

To Cologne

Leaving Oberammergau this morning, we travel by coach to Munich where we board the local rail service for Cologne, a superb city found along the mighty Rhine River.

We check into our hotel before you have some free time to discover the charms of Cologne. Take the time to meander through the historical medieval streets, discovering Cologne's twisting history as both a French and German city. The crowning glory of the city is undoubtedly the indomitable twin-spired cathedral, whose memorable visage is instantly identifiable. A Gothic masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage site, construction began on this cathedral in 1248. It also claims to house the remains of the famous three kings, or magi, from the Nativity scene in a sarcophagus behind the alter.
