Our excursion this morning takes us on a fascinating tour of Amsterdam, exploring the hidden gems of Holland's capital. Admire the gabled buildings, merchant houses and quaint bridges on our guided tour and canal cruise. We pass many of the 17th century merchant warehouses so characteristic of the city, cruising under several of the canal's bridges before returning to the ship for lunch. This afternoon we begin cruising towards Germany.

Day 3

We spend our day in the magnificent city of Cologne. It boasts many museums and Romanesque churches, and also a pleasant Old Town between the Alter Markt and the Rhine. We enjoy a walking tour of Cologne which includes the city's historic streets, elegant squares and medieval churches - and a visit to the impressive Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which stands out as the city's most famous landmark. After our tour of Cologne we re-board ship and cruise towards Koblenz. This afternoon we enjoy an exclusive talk from Professor Ian Beckett. We learn more about the rich history, enduring myths and fascinating legends associated with the Rhine in his speech "The Stream of Time".

Day 4

Today we cruise past the timeless scenery of hilltop castles and the legendary Lorelei Rock of the Rhine Gorge, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Our destination is one of the Rhine Valley's most popular wine towns, Rüdesheim. Take a stroll along the world-renowned Drosselgasse - a street lined with traditional pubs and wine cellars. We enjoy a wine tasting to sample the terrific local produce. This evening you may choose to visit Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet, the town's museum for musical instruments, or enjoy a glass of local Rüdesheimer coffee in a friendly café.

Speyer, Kaiserdom Cathedral
Day 5

Speyer or Heidelberg

Today we arrive in Mannheim, and from here we travel by coach to historic Heidelberg, one of Germany's most attractive towns, which lies below its protective castle on the River Neckar. The castle dominates the town's skyline and, after falling into disrepair over the centuries, is now restored to its former glory. The picturesque Old Town, or Altstadt, contains many fine old buildings and a bustling market. Alternatively, you may wish to visit Speyer, an imperial city with a famous Romanesque cathedral. The excursion here gives you chance to see the highlights of Speyer including its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that celebrated its 950th anniversary in 2011 and which is well known as the final resting place of eight German Emperors and Kings.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6

Today we have the opportunity to explore Strasbourg. The city has changed hands several times and both German and French influences can be seen in abundance. We enjoy a panoramic city tour which takes us past the Orangery, the European Parliament and Place de la République. We then discover the area known as 'La Petite France' on a walking tour which leads us to the city's Gothic cathedral.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7

This morning we arrive in Breisach, a fortified hill town at the Rhine's edge. You have the option to join one of three shore excursions. You could join a walking tour of Riquewihr, a picturesque wineproducing town filled with charming 16th century buildings. Alternatively, you could take a combined walking tour of charming Breisach and historical Freiburg. Your third choice is a guided bicycle tour of Breisach.

We wake up this morning in Basel, a beautiful Swiss city that stands at the point where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. After breakfast we disembark the ship and take the high-speed rail service to Paris. On arrival in the French capital we connect with the Eurostar back to London, enjoying a light meal and drinks on board before our arrival at St Pancras International.
