Exploring Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city like Venice: founded on and still focussed today around water and waterways. However, unlike Venice, Holland's largest city is no mere museum piece. Amsterdam is a real, living and breathing metropolis; far more than just an oasis for tourists. Today, we board a glass-topped boat for a scenic cruise through the myriad of canals in the Dutch city, exploring Amsterdam's main landmarks from the water. Later this afternoon, transfer to a coach for the journey to Utrecht to see the iconic 'Rembrandt's Windmills' - one of the enduring images of rural Holland that has been made famous by the artist. Back aboard our vessel this evening there is a Captain's Welcome Dinner with live entertainment.

Days 3-4

Brühl and the Rhine Gorge

We arrive in Cologne this morning and head south into the Rhineland, bound for the historic town of Brühl. Here, we embark on a fascinating excursion to the elegant Augustusburg Castle. Built by the archbishop Clemens August, the expansive estate is one of the country's best examples of German Rococo. After some free time here, we continue on to the similarly designed Falkenlust hunting lodge, which once provided German dignitaries with a luxurious place of residence when out hunting in the surrounding forests. The following day, our journey continues through the breathtaking scenery of the Rhine Gorge. Dramatic valleys and rolling hills surround us on either shore as we meander along the river, picking our way through lush vineyards and past romantic castles and towns. We arrive in the town of Rüdesheim, fabled for its wine production. Here, we join the quaint Winzerexpress train through the town centre to Siegfreid's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, which charts the history of the music box.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5

On to Würzburg

We arrive in the city of Würzburg today, in Germany's Bavarian region. The colourful city is full of rich rococo architecture and classical Baroque buildings. Here we have a guided tour and free time. Perhaps visit one of the many wine taverns that this region is famous for, Würzburg is central to the Franconian wine industry. Alternatively, you could explore the Marienberg Fortress, which sits atop a grassy promontory at the head of the cityscape and its restored interiors are full of historical artefacts and works of art.

Discovering UNESCO Bamberg

We cruise into Bamberg today, a town spread over seven hills and boasting UNESCO status. Situated at the confluence of the Regnitz and Main rivers, medieval Bamberg is one of Germany's oldest and most visited towns. We explore Bamberg on a guided tour, visiting some of the key sights including the impressive Romanesque Cathedral and its wealth of sculpture and the twin spires of Michaelsberg Abbey. Bamberg's ancient centre is rich in charming old timber-framed houses, such as the Altstadt and Rathaus buildings, giving the city a truly timeless feel. Tonight there is a farewell dinner to mark our last night aboard our vessel.
