Departure Times

We write to all booked customers approximately 10 weeks prior to the start of their tour to advise the exact departure and return time for their particular group.

Days 1-3

London to Venice by First Class rail

We begin our cruising adventure at the Great Rail Journeys' departure office in St Pancras station. We then board the Eurostar for the first leg of our journey to Paris. From here we continue to Turin for an overnight stay and dinner. We continue to the Floating City of Venice on Day 2, where we enjoy a tour on Day 3, taking in many of the city's famous sights. These include St Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, the famous Sansoviniana Bookshop and the iconic bell tower, as well as the waters of the lagoon.

MV Aegean Odyssey
Days 4-5

The Aegean Odyssey to Urbino

After a leisurely morning, today we make our way to Venice's port to board our luxurious cruise ship, the MV Aegean Odyssey. On board we enjoy a welcome cocktail before settling in to our fabulous surroundings - home for the next 13 nights. After our first sumptuous dinner, we set sail along the coast to Urbino, a walled city and World Heritage site notable for a remarkable historical legacy of independent Renaissance culture. Day 5 is spent at sea.

Days 6-7

Split, Dubrovnik and cruising Kotor Bay

Adriatic, we arrive into the second largest city in Croatia - Split. Here we embark on a guided tour that whisks us off to see the breathtaking Diocletian Palace, an ancient fortress in the heart of Split's Old Town, and the Temple of Jupiter, which will transport you back to ancient Rome in an instant. Afterwards you may like to continue exploring at leisure, or alternatively join an optional excursion that visits Salona and Trogir; two of the most important archaeological sites from Roman and early medieval times. We enjoy dinner on our return to the ship, after which we set sail along the Dalmatian Coast to Dubrovnik. On Day 7 we experience the treasures of the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' on a sightseeing tour that includes the city walls, which have protected Dubrovnik's inhabitants for centuries, and the baroque splendour of the church of St Blaise and Dubrovnik Cathedral, whose main altar features a painting of 'The Assumption' by Titian. We spend the afternoon cruising through The Bay of Kotor, a vast butterfly shaped expanse of water surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.

Days 8-9

Corfu and a day at sea

After sailing past Montenegro and Albania, we arrive in Corfu, on the east side of the Greek island. Here you can choose from two included excursions; a tour of Venetian or Byzantine Corfu. This afternoon you are free, so may like to delve into Corfu's ancient intellectual and artistic roots, visible through its many fine museums. Day 9 is spent crossing the Ionian Sea, during which time you can relax, taking advantage of the MV Aegean Odyssey's many leisure facilities and interesting lectures.

Days 10-11

Sicily and Sorrento

From our mooring point in Taormina, we take a guided tour of the Sicilian city which includes a visit to the 7th century Greco-Roman theatre, one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily due to its remarkable preservation and stunning location. This afternoon we re-board the ship for a journey through the Strait of Messina, a narrow passage that connects the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, past the Lipari islands, including volcanic Stromboli, to Sorrento. Docking in the town's own 'mini bay', situated within the large Bay of Naples, on Day 11, we enjoy excursions to either the vast archaeological remains of Pompeii, or the smaller but slightly better preserved ruins of Herculaneum. Both were once prosperous cities surrounding Mount Vesuvius, when in AD79 an enormous eruption took place, killing their entire populations almost immediately.

Days 12-13

Rome and Florence

Following our ship's arrival, we transfer from the port to the heart of the Eternal City for a guided tour. Rome is a never-ending trove of historic, cultural and artistic treasures, and during our sightseeing we take in the mighty Colosseum and St Peter's Basilica, positioned in the famous country within a country - Vatican City. Our next port of call is Florence on Day 13, 'the jewel of the Renaissance'. Here we enjoy included entrance to the Uffizi, which features works by artists such as Botticelli and Caravaggio, and the Accademia, proud home of Michelangelo's statue of David.

Days 14-15

Sailing to Marseilles and Avignon

We spend much of today at sea, cruising the French Riviera to Marseilles where we moor for the night. On Day 15 you may choose to visit Avignon's impressive Palais des Papes, one of Europe's largest and most important Gothic buildings, or take a tour of Marseille's historic sights.

Days 16-17

To Nice, Monte Carlo and home

Today we go sightseeing in glamorous Monte Carlo, steeped in 700 years of Grimaldi royal history, this area of Monaco boasts a stunning location, tucked between French medieval villages and the Alps. After a final dinner tonight, we disembark on Day 17 for the return First Class journey back to London.
