Day 1

London to Bergen

We meet our group and Tour Manager at London's Gatwick airport. Here we board our flight to Bergen, arriving early afternoon. After transferring to our hotel for the night, we embark on a sightseeing tour of the city. This exploration by coach introduces us to some of Bergen's most impressive attractions including the delightful Bryggen waterfront, the city's old Hanseatic trading wharf and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This historic quarter, with its charming timber houses, is the oldest part of Bergen - with some buildings dating back to the 15th century. On our return to the 4-Star Clarion Admiral Hotel, we enjoy dinner together.

Day 2

Rail and sail to Flåm

This morning we transfer to the railway station where we board the train to Voss. From here we are driven by coach to the town of Gudvangen to board a boat which will take us across Nærøyfjord to Flåm. This scenic crossing gives us our first taste of Norway's spectacular fjords as we glide across the water through a region listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its natural beauty. This scenic crossing gives us our first taste of the Norwegian fjords in winter. As we glide past across the water sailing past snow-topped mountains and sleepy villages, there is no better way to experience the beauty of the fjords.

On arrival in Flåm we check into our hotel, the 4-Star Flamsbygga, ahead of an optional walk around the fjord and surrounding mountains, breathing the invigorating winter air as you are immersed into this magical setting lit by the glittering stars overhead. On our return we enjoy a highlight of our tour, a traditional five-course Viking plank feast. Accompanied by local beer, we delight in a plethora of edible treats inspired by Nordic history. As we bask in the glow of an open fire, we will be entertained by stories of fearless Vikings, mythological creatures and, a familiar folk tale in these parts, trolls.

Flam Railway
Day 3

The Flåm Railway

Today we board the iconic Flåm Railway, previously voted one of the world's most incredible railway journeys by Lonely Planet. A branch line of the Bergen Railway, the scenic line takes passengers on a wonderful 12.5 mile (20km) journey up one of the steepest railway routes in the world. The train negotiates horseshoe curves, twists, turns and 20 tunnels - 18 of which were drilled by hand. The scenery as you travel across the 'Roof of Norway' is truly spectacular, with rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and remote farms passing by the window as we travel towards Myrdal at 2,838 feet (865m). From here we continue to Geilo, known as the village in the mountains, to check-in to our hotel for the night, the 4-Star Dr Holms. After time to settle in, we enjoy a truly unique Scandinavian experience as we are met by a horse-drawn sleigh, which will transport us in style to the Hallingstuene restaurant for a three-course dinner.

Day 4

Continue to Røros

We begin our journey to magical Røros this morning, the 'heart of Norway', beginning with a coach transfer to Hamar. From here we join the Røros Railway which will transport us along the Glomma river through the wilderness of Østerdalen's forests, home to moose, wolves and bears. On arrival in this former mining town, that experiences some of the coldest temperatures in Norway, we transfer to our home for the next three nights - the Scandic Bergstadens Hotel.

Norwegian Reindeer
Day 5

A Norwegian reindeer experience

Begin today with free time to explore Røros at your own pace. As a thriving UNESCO World Heritage site, you will discover a playground of narrow streets and traditional wooden buildings that are a delight to explore anytime of year, but are especially enchanting in winter - so much so that it became the inspiration for the setting of Disney's popular film, 'Frozen.'

Later this evening we make the short walk from our hotel to a nearby, Sami-run reindeer farm, where we are treated to tales about the life of a reindeer herder and their charges, also getting to meet these majestic animals themselves. It was at this reindeer farm where Disney animators got the idea for the now famous characters of Kristoff, based on the Sami farmer here, Magne Haugom, and Sven, his faithful reindeer. To warm ourselves up we sit down to an authentic two-course meal in a 'Gamme', a wooden hut featuring a roaring fire at its centre.

Tour of Roros
Day 6

Guided tour of Røros

We set out for a walking tour this morning where, accompanied by a local guide, we take in the sights that make this destination so unique. This includes the church which looks down protectively over the town from the highest point in Røros. Dating back to 1784, it's a fine example of Norwegian Baroque architecture and we enjoy time to look around the interior, filled with paintings of local patrons - the perfect way to immerse ourselves in the abundant heritage here.

After our explorations, you are free to continue sightseeing at your own pace. Perhaps relax in a nearby café and take in the views of characterful houses tumbling down the hillside towards this seductive village; once described by the Norwegian writer Johan Falkberget as 'a place of whispering history'. Alternatively you could join one of this afternoon's optional excursions - either a husky sledding experience or a visit to Olavsgruva, 'Olav's Mine', to discover more about Røros' copper mining past.

Day 7

Continue to Trondheim

With a morning at leisure, you might like to participate in one of the optional excursions that you didn't get round to yesterday, or perhaps take a crisp winter's walk before we take the train to Trondheim, one of the oldest cities in Norway and a renowned centre for culture. We stay here for two nights at the Scandic Nidelven Hotel.

Trondheim Nidaros
Day 8

Exploring Trondheim

A guided walking tour this morning allows us to explore the heart of the city including the pilgrimage site and stunning green-roofed cathedral of Nidarosdomen as well as the wharf or 'Bakklandet', located in the Old Quarter. Crossing over the bridge into this part of town is like stepping back in time as you wander past the colourful houses that line the banks of the Nidelven River. Each has been well preserved over the years, allowing us to experience a true taste of old Norway.

The afternoon is free for you to delve deeper into Trondheim's treasures and broad sweeping avenues. You could visit the Ringve Museum, which features a collection of musical instruments from all over the world.

Return by air
Day 9

Return to London by air

Enjoy some time at leisure before we are taken by coach to Trondheim airport for our direct flight back to London Gatwick, where our tour comes to an end.
