We walk up to the roof of the new State Opera House - an impressive example of modern architecture - to admire the view over the city. Day 3

Oslo to Trondheim

Today we leave Oslo and head north by rail, along the line of the Dovre Railway. Our wonderfully scenic daytime journey takes us through the majestic landscape of the Dovrefjell - a mountain range separating eastern Norway from the region surrounding Trondheim, known as Trondelag. The mountains are part of the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, a protected region which is a natural habitat for many rare plants and animals. At the end of our journey we arrive in Trondheim for two nights at the Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel.

Day 4

Exploring Trondheim

As one of Norway's oldest cities, Trondheim is brimming with history and culture, which we discover on this morning's guided walking tour. Among the many attractions, we see the Royal Residence, which was once the official seat of the Norwegian kings. We also take in the cathedral, and the pretty wooden houses of Bakklandet. After the tour, you are free to explore Trondheim at your own pace.

Day 5

The 'Polar Express'

We leave Trondheim early this morning for a spectacular journey north by rail. We travel along the Nordland Railway on a 729 kilometre journey to Bodø. The route takes us through the beautiful and varied landscape of northern Norway, past gently sloping hills and distant mountains, majestic lakes and deep forests, rocky coastline and views across small islands and out over the open sea. We cross the Arctic Circle - 66 degrees north - shortly before reaching the town of Lonsdal, which marks the highest point of the railway at 512m above sea level. The train reaches the town of Fauske before turning due west for the final short section of the journey to Bodø, widely regarded as 'the city with the world's most beautiful coastline'. We spend the night at the Thon Hotel Nordlys.

Day 6

Bodø and the Lofoten Islands

After a leisurely morning in Bodø, this afternoon we board a Hurtigruten ship, and travel from Bodø to Svolvaer, the tiny capital of the stunningly beautiful Lofoten Islands. Described as Europe's most dramatic and spectacular islands, the Lofoten Islands are tethered to mainland Norway by a series of bridges and tunnels. The islands are home to countless small fishing communities, their picturesque houses built on timber piles with seawater under the floorboards and imposing cliffs towering 3,000ft above. We spend two nights at the Thon Hotel Lofoten or Scandic Svolvaer.

Day 7

Sea eagles and the Trollfjord

We enjoy a spectacular cruising tour around the stunning Lofoten Islands and some of the rocky landscapes just off shore. Departing from Svolvaer, we pass through waters which provide a feeding ground for an array of creatures, including the sea eagle. These majestic birds have a wing span of up to 8ft, and we hope to spot them as they swoop and dive for their prey. Following a light lunch of local fish soup, we sail into the spellbinding Trollfjord, an enclave of water surrounded by towering peaks, and just 300ft wide in places. After time to admire the mesmerising views, we return to Svolvaer.

Day 8

Hurtigruten voyage

Today's excursion takes us on a scenic drive to Bøstad along the winding coastal roads and bridges that link these magnificent islands. Here we visit the enthralling Lofotr Viking Museum, which depicts life from a thousand years ago with its variety of recreated buildings. In the afternoon we visit an organic cheese maker and enjoy a tasting of the produce. On our return journey we visit the glorious Unstad Beach, with its pristine white sands. Back in Svolvaer, we enjoy dinner at the hotel this evening, before joining our Hurtigruten ship for the next stage of our adventure. On our coastal voyage of discovery, we will marvel at the ever-changing landscapes and wildlife of Norway's northern shores. Our exciting journey on board will take us from the Arctic Ocean to the Barents Sea - through the incredible 'Land of the Midnight Sun.

North Cape
Days 9-10

Tromsø, Honningsvåg and North Cape

Today we dock in Tromsø, the polar capital of Norway, which stands on its own forest-covered island. You can explore Tromsø independently, or perhaps take one of the ship's optional excursions such as whale watching or kayaking. Tonight, with weather conditions permitting, we may be able to see the Midnight Sun. Every 'night' when skies are clear, the sun stays above the horizon for 24 hours, casting intense extended daylight that is a joy to see. Whilst the phenomenon may have been visible since we crossed the Arctic Circle (on Day 5), sightings become more likely as we travel further north. On Day 10 we arrive in Honningsvåg, the most northerly town in Europe and the gateway to the North Cape. You are free to discover the town, with its brightly coloured houses and picturesque bay, or perhaps head to the North Cape and its visitor centre on an optional excursion.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Day 10 - Free Day
Days 11-12

Kirkenes, the Pasvik Valley and London

This morning we reach Kirkenes, where we disembark the ship for a night at the Thon Hotel. During the day we enjoy an excursion to the Pasvik Valley National Park. We see Langfjorden before arriving at Bioforsk Botanical Gardens. Here many perennial plants from as far away as China and Alaska are set out in colourful displays. There are also exhibitions on the local wildlife, which includes brown bears and elk. Later we enjoy an atmospheric lunch in a Viking Longhouse, before a tour of a husky kennel. Back in Kirkenes, we have a farewell meal in the hotel.

On Day 12 we transfer to the airport for our flight to London, via Oslo.
