Departure Times

On our Langley Castle tour, you may check in at the first hotel on your itinerary anytime after 15:00; your Tour Manager will be available at 16:00. Our guided walking tour will commence at 17.45 and will last for 2hrs.

York Minster
Days 1-2

York and Langley Castle

Your tour begins in York, as you meet your Tour Manager at the Royal York Hotel. Later we enjoy a guided tour of this beautiful city, taking in the striking Minster and the cobbled Shambles among other landmarks.

On Day 2 we travel to join the famous Settle & Carlisle Line - a route regarded as one of the world's top railway journeys. We alight in Appleby before visiting Appleby Castle for afternoon tea, later we transfer into Northumberland to Langley Castle. The castle's dramatic 14th century tower is apparent from the approach, making for a breathtaking sight. After settling in, we enjoy dinner.

Day 3

Langley Castle, Roman Heritage & Hexham

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Langley Castle, detailing its turbulent 600-year history. Later we travel to Hadrian's Wall country. We visit the fascinating Roman Vindolanda, an open excavation site where ancient Roman writing tablets were uncovered, voted Britain's greatest treasure. We also visit the Roman Army Museum, whose exhibits and artefacts give a real insight into what life was like serving on Hadrian's Wall. We continue to Hexham with time to explore the attractive town.

Alnwick Gardens
Day 4

Alnwick Castle and Gardens

We visit magnificent Alnwick Castle today. Its beauty has made it a fine location for film-makers, being used in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films. We also take a tour of the beautifully landscaped Alnwick Gardens ahead of a free afternoon to discover Alnwick itself.

York City Walls
Days 5-6

South Tynedale Railway & Return to York

On today's excursion we enjoy a return journey on the heritage South Tynedale Railway. We then head to the Killhope Museum. Tonight we enjoy a special farewell dinner in the Banqueting Hall. On Day 6, we transfer by coach to Newcastle. Here we join the rail service (First Class) to York, where the tour concludes.
