Days 6-7

Milan and at leisure by Lake Garda

Today we travel by coach to the stylish city of Milan - Italy's fast paced and fashionable economic capital. We begin our time in Milan with a guided tour, by coach and on foot, including a visit to the incredible Duomo - the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. We visit the historical Sforzesco Castle, and the beautiful 19th century glass-roofed shopping arcade, the 'Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.' The highlight of our trip to Milan is a visit to the famous church and cloister of Santa Maria delle Grazie where we see Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'. Nestled into an adjoining wall between the refectory and the Basilica di Santa Maria, Milan's most famous mural dates back to the 15th century, yet maintains its popularity to the present day. Over the years, 'The Last Supper' has suffered no small amount of wear and tear; most notably, Jesus lost his feet, along with a lower portion of the fresco, after building works in 1652. However, thanks to restoration, the stunning piece remains astonishing. The most recent fixes were completed in 1999, after more than 22 years of work, allowing viewers to appreciate da Vinci's iconic masterpiece for years to come'. We return to Lake Garda, where Day 7 is spent at leisure - you could visit the picturesque town of Sirmione, on a promontory jutting into the lake. Known as the 'Pearl of the Lake', pictureperfect Sirmione is a pleasure to explore. One of the most peaceful towns on Lake Garda, the town is bursting with history and charm, including the imposing Rocca Scaligera - a beautifully preserved 13th century castle surrounded by a large water-filled moat that dominates the Old Quarter of town.

Day 8

Today we board the high-speed train for a full-day excursion to the fabulous city of Venice. Arriving at the city's Santa Lucia station close to the Grand Canal, we are greeted by a truly glorious view of the Venice lagoon. A private boat transports us along the Giudecca Canal - our first chance to soak up the wonderful atmosphere of this unique city. We arrive at St Mark's Square, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful city squares in the world. Overlooked by St Mark's Basilica, the large open space is surrounded by the Doge's Palace, the Procurator's Residence, the famous Sansoviniana Bookshop and the iconic bell tower, as well as the waters of the lagoon. Our local guide greets us in St Mark's Square and takes us on a walking tour of the city, leading us around the narrow winding streets and small squares to visit some of Venice's main sights, including St Mark's Basilica. Your afternoon is free to explore at leisure. We return to Lake Garda by high-speed train.

Our itinerary for this departure differs slightly; on Day 3 we visit Venice, and Day 5 is spent at leisure. Our visit to Isola del Garda takes place on Day 7, and Day 8 is free to explore Lake Garda. On Day 4 the Valpolicella tasting and dinner is replaced by a 3 course meal in a restaurant in Verona.
