Day 2

Excursion to Isola del Garda

Today we enjoy a cruise across the calm waters of Lake Garda to the wooded Isola del Garda, the biggest island in the lake. Dominated by an impressive neo-Gothic villa, it can be reached only by private boat. We sail across to see the elegant house and flower-filled gardens, scented with lemon and pine. Exotic plants jostle for position among verdant foliage, and beautifully manicured terraces run down to the water. We enjoy a guided tour of the turreted house and some free time to relax under the shade of a cypress tree. Before we return to Gardone by boat there is chance to enjoy a tasting of local olive oils and wine.

Take a walk through the historic centre of Gardone, located on the hillside above the lakefront, or explore the nearby Heller Botanic Garden. You can visit the home of eccentric poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, which he named after an Italian military victory: Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, The house is an excessive memorial to a very unusual Italian.

Verona & Valpolicella

Today we travel by coach to fabulous Verona, a city of Roman ruins and romance - made famous by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Our guided tour takes us into the heart of Verona. We see Juliet's balcony and the great Roman arena, which is almost fully intact and is still used today as an open air opera house, with performances taking place in the popular summer season. Following our tour we have some free time to further explore. We then leave Verona and travel to Valpollicela where we have a wine tasting and a talk on the local region's wine production and its heritage. We then enjoy a dinner of home made dishes and specialties in an idyllic rustic farmhouse. We return to Gardone by coach.

Day 5

Today we travel by coach to the stylish city of Milan - Italy's fast paced and fashionable economic capital. We begin our time in Milan with a guided tour, by coach and on foot, including a visit to the incredible Duomo - the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. We visit the historical Sforzesco Castle, and the beautiful 19th century glass-roofed shopping arcade, the 'Galleria Vittorio Emanuele'. The highlight of our trip to Milan is a visit to the famous church and cloister of Santa Maria delle Grazie where we see Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'. Nestled into an adjoining wall between the refectory and the Basilica di Santa Maria, Milan's most famous mural dates back to the 15th century, yet maintains its popularity to the present day. Over the years, 'The Last Supper' has suffered no small amount of wear and tear; most notably, Jesus lost his feet, along with a lower portion of the fresco, after building works in 1652. However, thanks to restoration, the stunning piece remains astonishing. The most recent fixes were completed in 1999, after more than 22 years of work, allowing viewers to appreciate da Vinci's iconic masterpiece for years to come.

Day 6

At leisure by Lake Garda

Today is free for exploration - you could visit the picturesque town of Sirmione, on a promontory jutting into the lake. Known as the 'Pearl of the Lake', pictureperfect Sirmione is a pleasure to explore. One of the most peaceful towns on Lake Garda, the town is bursting with history and charm, including the imposing Rocca Scaligera - a beautifully preserved 13th century castle surrounded by a large water-filled moat that dominates the Old Quarter of town. Alternatively, simply enjoy the hotel's facilities. The Savoy Palace boasts beautiful gardens to relax in, an outdoor pool with sun loungers, and a terrace bar, with beautiful views over Lake Garda. You could even treat yourself to a massage or therapy in the hotel's tranquil wellness centre (payable locally).
