Itinerary

Day 1 - London and Colmar

Our tour begins as we meet at London St Pancras for the Eurostar service to Paris. Changing trains in the French capital for Colmar, a pretty Alsatian town close to the German border, we check into our hotel for the night on arrival.

Includes
  • Dinner
  • Eurostar Meal
Day 2 - Klosters

Enjoy a free morning, possibly sightseeing, in Colmar. With cobbled lanes and colourful, half-timbered buildings, you might wander through Colmar's flower-filled canal quarter - known as 'Petite Venise' - before we continue our journey to Switzerland. Travelling by rail to Basel, we change trains in Landquart for the Alpine resort-village of Klosters, a famous ski resort renowned as a long-favoured holiday destination of the British Royal Family. Our home for the next six nights is the delightful 3-Star Hotel Steinbock in the heart of the town.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Kesslerhof

We visit a dairy farm in nearby Kesslerhof this morning, meeting the animals and the family who run the farm, on a tour. Afterwards, we taste some of the delicious free-range produce amid glorious Alpine scenery. Your afternoon is free in Klosters. In the peaceful mountain atmosphere you'll find streets of wooden chalets, traditional restaurants and cafés, and stylish boutiques. You could also make the most of your inclusive Davos Klosters Travel Card, which provides free travel on local cable cars for convenient access to the surrounding mountains.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 - The Bernina Express

We take the train to nearby Davos Platz, where our journey on the wonderful Bernina Express begins. Connecting Switzerland and Italy via one of the highest mountain railways in the Alps, the narrow-gauge Bernina Express rises to the challenge of steep gradients, delighting us with a journey of breathtaking beauty. We pass rushing mountain streams, pretty flowering meadows and snow-capped peaks on our way to Tirano. After crossing the Italian border we travel along the banks of Lake Como and through the vineyards of Velting before arriving in Tirano. There is free time to explore before our return journey to Klosters.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - Filisur

Boarding a local vintage train, we make our way to the small village of Filisur. Here, you could join an optional short walk through the countryside to the base of the Landwasser Viaduct, a must-see for all railway enthusiasts and an awe-inspiring feat of engineering. With its 200-foot high pillars, this elegant viaduct transports trains across the river and into the rugged Landwasser Tunnel, via its vast and curving limestone archways. Watch in awe as local trains travelling along the Rhaetian Railway pass by 213 feet above our heads. You may prefer to explore the interesting village of Filisur which, although small, is one of the best preserved Engadine one-street villages.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 – The Schatzalp Funicular Railway

We discover Schatzalp today, also known as 'The Magic Mountain' as it is mentioned in Thomas Mann's novel of the same name. We take the Schatzalp Funicular Railway for a four-minute journey to historic Schatzalp, 984 feet above the town, to visit the botanical gardens. We tour the displays with the director of the Alpinum gardens, featuring thousands of different plant species from mountain regions across the world, including China, New Zealand and Tibet. Back in Klosters this evening, we enjoy pre-dinner drinks at our hotel ahead of an expert talk about the British royal family with Clair Southwell, who worked closely with The Prince of Wales and his family for decades.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7 - Klosters

With another free day, you might like to explore one of the 434 miles of hiking trails which begin in the village or possibly use your Davos Klosters Travel Card which allows free travel on local cable cars to surrounding mountains from nearby Davos. Davos also has a scenic lake where you might like to brave a bit of wild swimming. Alternatively, you could discover historic Chur or take a scenic rail trip along the acclaimed Arosa Line.

We enjoy a highlight of our holiday today, a journey on the renowned Glacier Express. The train crosses the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route, before descending to the town of Brig. In Brig we change trains for Bern, continuing to Basel where we spend the night.

St Pancras a nightmare. Train travel great wonderful scenery. One day too energetic when walk instead of taxi/ bus. Manager excellent particularly when medical emergency affected our family.

Overpriced, awful food, lousy non-train excursions, Glacier express? - what glaciers. Endlessly changing trains, very early starts, regimented dining. Nice sauna in the hotel though, highlight of the trip

An enjoyable holiday although the Bernina Express day was too long. The food choices were inadequate at all hotels, with only a choice of two permitted for the main courses. The hotels were of good standard otherwise.
