Jungfrau Express
Day 5

Jungfrau Express to the ‘Top of Europe’

Our excursion today is unquestionably the highlight of any visit to the Bernese Oberland, as we travel on the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch - the highest railway station in Europe. We begin on the Bernese Oberland Railway through the foothills of the Alps from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, through lush, verdant pastures, passing pretty villages and idyllic farming cabins. In Lauterbrunnen, we change trains to continue our ascent through ever changing scenery, to reach Kleine Scheidegg, where we join the Jungfrau Railway itself.

The famous narrow-gauge line was completed in 1912 and is celebrated as a major feat of engineering. Continuing to climb, from Kleine Scheidegg the distinctive string of red and yellow carriages disappear into the tunnel through the Eiger mountain, making stops at the observation windows hewn out of solid Alpine rock, which offer spectacular views of the valley below. The train then emerges at Jungfraujoch, the 'Top of Europe', located at 3,454m (11,333 ft) above sea level. With free time at the summit station, you will have plenty of time to admire the incredible views over the Alps. From the Sphinx Terrace, there are superb views onto the Aletsch Glacier, at 22 km the longest ice stream in the Alps, and the walking plateau is eternally covered in snow - both of which contrast sharply with the green meadows and Alpine pastures of the lower lying hillsides near the valley floor. Whilst at Jungfraujoch you should also take the time to visit the Ice Palace, with its labyrinth of tunnels and many fantastic ice sculptures. Following time to explore and to enjoy lunch, we descend via the charming mountain resort of Grindelwald. The famous mountains around Grindelwald are holiday location stars in their own rights and have been used as the settings and backdrops for scenes in some of Hollywood's biggest films including James Bond and Star Wars

Schynige Platte Railway
Day 6

Schynige Platte

Today we take the cog railway through Alpine meadows to Schynige Platte*, for spectacular views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains. We travel in restored 19th century carriages, hauled by a vintage electric locomotive, to the peak at 6,463 ft (1,970m). At the summit, why not explore the Alpine Botanical Garden, home to around 600 plant species, or relax and drink in the views from the café terrace?

*Please note this railway does not operate until early June. Departures before then will travel to Lucerne instead.

  • Schynige Platte excursion

Day 7

Lake Thun cruise and Thun

We take to the water today as we enjoy a fantastic cruise across Lake Thun, passing delightful waterfront villages and idyllic lakeside castles nestled below the towering mountain peaks. The cruise takes us along the entire length of the lake to the town of Thun, located on the opposite shore from our starting point in Interlaken. We enjoy free time in delightful Thun, often referred to as the 'gateway to the Bernese Oberland'. We return to Interlaken by train.
