Day 1

London to Bergen

Our Norwegian adventure begins at London Gatwick, where we take the mid-morning flight to fascinating Bergen. This naturally beautiful city resides in the shadows of seven mountains and is famed for its proximity to delightful fjords and the wharf of Bryggen. On arrival we transfer from the airport and enjoy a captivating sightseeing tour of this marvellous city. We begin at Troldhaugen, the former residence of Romantic composer and pianist Edvard Grieg, and continue to Bergen's popular harbour-side fish market. We then move on to one of Bergen's most historically important areas, Bryggen. Here we see the former offices of the Hanseatic League which were originally erected in 1360. The earliest pier constructions date back even further, to around 1100. Because of Bryggen's remarkable heritage it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979, and has long been one of Bergen's most popular attractions. Following our tour we are dropped off at the Hurtigruten quay for the beginning of our cruise, departing this evening.

Saltstraumen and the Aviation Museum

We arrive in Bodø this afternoon. Situated just inside the Arctic Circle, it is the capital of Nordland County. Attractive Bodø is home to Saltstraumen and the Norwegian Aviation Museum, both of which we visit. We begin our excursion from the Hurtigruten quay, first to eye-opening Saltstraumen. Located about 6 miles southeast of Bodø, this strait is home to the strongest tidal current in the world, dramatically seen through its whirlpool. The maelstrom here has existed for an estimated 2-3 thousand years, and the surrounding waters are popular with anglers because of the wide array of different fish species that make their home here. We continue to the superb Norwegian Aviation Museum which is home to an excellent collection of former civilian and military aircraft, including an example the infamous American Lockheed U-2 spy plane, one of which was shot down over the former Soviet Union amidst heightening Cold War tensions.

Vast, ever-changing environments as far as the eye can see stretch out from our comfortable carriages as we strike out across Norway's dramatic landscape, watching as clear blue lakes, sparkling fjords and the spectacular Svartisen Glacier roll by our windows. On arrival in Trondheim, we transfer to our hotel enjoying a late dinner together.

Day 6

Exploring Trondheim

This morning we have some time at leisure in historic Trondheim. As Norway's former capital, this historic city is home to an abundance of heritage. Be sure to see the famous Old Town bridge as you wander through this city's winding streets. This afternoon we embark upon a sightseeing tour with two main focal points. The first is magnificent Nidaros Cathedral, a fusion of Romanesque and Gothic styles that bring the façade of this holy building to life. Built in the 11th century over the burial site of Olav, the 11th century King of Norway, this unique building has been an important pilgrimage destination for centuries. Bakklandet is our next stop, an attractive neighbourhood of Trondheim with colourful wooden houses and narrow streets.
