Itinerary

Day 1 - London and Montreux

We meet at London St Pancras before boarding the Eurostar to Paris. Continuing to Lausanne, we change trains for Montreux, checking into the 5-Star Fairmont Le Montreux Palace on arrival.

Includes
  • Dinner
  • Eurostar Meal
Day 2 - Château de Chillon

We transfer to elegant Château de Chillon, which rises dramatically from the waters of Lake Geneva and sits against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery. Crossing the wooden drawbridge, we meet our guide for a tour of this 13th-century château. Following our exploration, we enjoy a very special tasting of wines made from grapes grown in the castle's very own vineyard. Served with locally-produced bread flutes, afterwards, we make our way to the waterfront for a scenic boat cruise back to Montreux. The rest of your day is free. Surrounded by vineyard-covered hillsides, the striking blue waters of Lake Geneva, and the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps, Montreux enjoys an unusually mild climate and is known for its exotic Mediterranean plants, including the palm and cypress trees that line the promenade that runs along the lakefront, linking the town with neighbouring Vevey.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 3 - Gruyères Castle

Travelling by coach to Gruyères Castle, we have free time to immerse ourselves in over eight centuries of history and local legends, all set within wonderfully-preserved medieval fortifications amid the foothills of the Alps. There's also time to independently look around the picturesque town of Gruyères itself, a destination famed for its sweet, nutty cheese. Continuing to Gstaad, where there's free time, we make the return journey aboard the GoldenPass Panoramic train. One of the country's most scenic routes, relax as we enjoy views of pristine forests, Alpine valley meadows and clusters of traditional chalets dotting the green hillsides.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 4 - Montreux

Your day is free. You could use your Montreux Riviera Travel Card to visit some of the local attractions or explore further afield. Nearby Lausanne has been the home of the International Olympic Committee for over 100 years, so perhaps make a visit to the Olympic Museum, built to commemorate the city's proud sporting heritage. You'll find exhibits exploring the founding of the modern games as well as interactive displays reliving moments that have gone down in history. As the second largest city on Lake Geneva, you may also be tempted to enjoy a relaxing boat ride or stroll through the charming Old Town, dominated by its beautiful cathedral and regarded as Switzerland's most impressive example of early Gothic architecture.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 5 - The Mont Blanc Express

Boarding the Mont Blanc Express, we ride the length of this spectacular line across the French border to Chamonix. The route meanders through rows of vineyards before entering France. Passing through the charming landscapes of the Rhône Valley, the train climbs high into the mountains. Using a rack-and pinion mechanism, the Mont Blanc Express ascends past snow-capped peaks and deep valleys before reaching the Trient Gorge. As we approach the Chamonix Valley, we're welcomed by the breathtaking sight of glistening glaciers and majestic Mont Blanc itself. There's some free time in Chamonix before we make the return journey.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 6 - Lavaux wine tasting

We travel by rail to Cully, in the Lavaux region, where ancient terraced vineyards rise from the shores of Lake Geneva. Setting out with a local guide, we enjoy a tour of the vineyards, set against the backdrop of UNESCO-listed foothiils, by charming land train before visiting a local winery for a talk about the speciality grapes harvested and fermented here. Afterwards, we get to sample a variety of vintages at an expert-led wine tasting accompanied by some Swiss nibbles.
