Spend the festive season overlooking some of Europe's most scenic waters. Celebrate Christmas on the shores of Lake Bled, surrounded by tree-topped mountains, before exploring the iconic 'Floating City' of Venice, where ancient buildings overlook the stunning lagoon that gives the city an international reputation.
We fly from London Gatwick to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, today. From here we transfer by coach to the shores of Lake Bled, where we spend the next four nights at the Grand Hotel Toplice, excellently situated by the lakeside. Encompassed by the Julian Alps, the serene emerald-green waters and mountain surrounds make this a delightfully scenic retreat.
On Day 2, we begin our adventure with a traditional pletna boat ride across the shimmering waters of Lake Bled to Bled Island, a diminutive islet topped by dense woodland and a 12th century church. On arrival we enjoy a short tour of the island, followed by free time to explore.
After returning to the mainland, we visit Bled Castle, an incredible medieval fortress that stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake. We discover the castle, including its fascinating museum dedicated to the region's history, on a guided tour, before returning to our hotel.
After a free morning, we enjoy a traditional Christmas lunch together to celebrate today. Late this afternoon, we watch the Ceremony of the Sunken Bell. This dramatic re-telling of a local legend depicts the tragic story of a widow who once lived in Bled Castle. The tale claims the widow helped found the church now standing on Bled Island, though a series of unfortunate events left the chapel without a bell. Legend has it that the Pope had a new bell made in her memory, which today is known as the 'wishing bell'.
This morning we visit Postojna Caves, an enchanting series of 2 million year-old caverns. The stunning caves are filled with mesmerising rock formations, accessible on foot and via a specially-built electric train that runs through some 2 miles of this spectacular site.
Today we leave Lake Bled behind for an excursion to Trieste, a delightful Italian town that has inspired writers for centuries with its charms. After a guided tour we make our way to the 'Floating City' of Venice, gloriously set in its own shimmering lagoon. We take a guided walking tour of the city on Day 6, taking in key attractions including St Mark's Basilica. After a free morning on Day 7, we visit Doge's Palace, where Casanova was once incarcerated.
Today we transfer to the airport and fly to London.
