We write to all booked customers approximately 10 weeks prior to the start of their tour to advise the exact departure and return time for their particular group.

Day 1

Fly to Lisbon

We depart London Heathrow airport for Lisbon, the proud capital of scintillating Portugal. On arrival we transfer to the beautiful centrally located 5-star Altis Avenida, where we enjoy an after dinner talk from Dr John Wreglesworth on Portugal & The Age of Discovery. During your tour we will be treated to a complimentary glass of Champagne to celebrate our holiday.

Day 2

Exploring Lisbon

Today we enjoy a guided tour of charming Lisbon. Boarding an historic private tram, we are taken through the steep and narrow streets of Lisbon's traditional quarters, passing beautiful squares and grand architecture. We end in Belem, Lisbon's natural harbour that was regarded as "the historical heart and soul of Portugal". Here we visit Pasteis de Belem café, where we sample the famous cakes which give Belem its name. Your afternoon is free. You may wish to take a tram up to the Castle of Saõ Jorge, which offers a breathtaking panorama over the city and Portugal's Atlantic coastline.

Day 3


This morning we take the train to Sintra (Standard Class), nestled high in the hills above Lisbon, the favoured former summer residence of the Portuguese royal family for generations. Sintra is a beautiful village surrounded by wooded hills and is also the home of the spectacular and colourful Pena Palace. Your time here is at leisure, and you may like to venture into the Palace (payable locally) or perhaps explore one of Sintra's other exquisite estates. We enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

MS Amavida
Day 4

To Porto and MS AmaVida

Today we leave Lisbon and travel by rail (First Class) to Porto, or as it is known locally, Oporto. Here board our 5-Star cruise ship, the elegant MS AmaVida our home for the next seven nights. After taking time to settle in, we enjoy a welcome cocktail and dinner on board. From now on, the pace of your holiday is set by you alone.

Day 5


We spend a leisurely morning soaking up the beauty of the Douro River valley as we cruise to Régua. Lush scenic hills and terraced vineyards slope gently up, dotted with groves, farmhouses and sleepy villages. We arrive into Régua, renowned for its spectacular scenery. As the official Port production centre of Portugal, the area is laden with 'quintas', or winegrowing estates, one of which we visit and enjoy a tasting of traditional wine.

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Day 6


This morning, we enjoy an excursion to the ancient town of Lamego, where we visit one of Portugal's most important pilgrimage sites, the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, or Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, where we enjoy a guided tour. This afternoon we cruise through dramatic gorges en route to Barca d'Alva.

Day 7

Salamanca, Spain

This morning we board a coach to Salamanca, known as the 'Golden City' for the glow from its sandstone buildings. Here we enjoy a tour, seeing the Romanesque 12th century Church of San Martin, before experiencing an authentic Spanish lunch, and seeing a live Flamenco show. We rejoin the ship in Vega de Terrón. This evening we visit a 'quinta'.

Day 8

Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo

We visit Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a charming fortified village perched high in the hills with impressive 16th century walls. Your time here is free to explore the steep, narrow streets - be sure to pay a visit to the striking Chafariz dos Pretos fountain, set apart by its mysterious black face carvings. We return to the ship and cruise to Pinhão, and visit a local 'quinta' to enjoy dinner and wine tasting.

Palacio de Mateus
Day 9

Palacio de Mateus and Entre-os-Rios

We embark on an excursion to the opulent, Baroque Palacio de Mateus. This glorious Italianate mansion was built in the 18th century, its interior adorned with stunning religious imagery and intricate wood carvings, crowned by its immaculate gardens, which have often been described as the most beautiful in Portugal. We return to the ship for lunch and cruise to Entre-os-Rios. Dinner tonight is served with a glass of Port at the Alpendurada Monastery.

Days 10-11

Porto and return to London

Today we sail back into Porto. Once the very edge of the known world, from where daring explorers risked their lives to discover the New World, Porto bears a great Portuguese legacy, which we explore on a guided tour. We see iconic Porto cathedral and Saõ Bento railway station with its magnificent panels depicting scenes of Portuguese history. We also enjoy a final Port tasting, in the heart of the city from which its name is derived. Tonight we enjoy a farewell gala dinner on board. After breakfast on Day 11, we transfer to the airport for our flight home.

Dr John Wreglesworth

Dr John Wreglesworth is an independent scholar who has been leading tours since 1998. His fields of study are exploring European culture from Portugal to Russia. John has a long career lecturing in schools, colleges and universities. Due to his teaching work and research programmes John regularly visits the Iberian Peninsula. His wide ranging knowledge of Europe's history and its cultural treasures provides him with the perfect outlook to deliver his Portugal & The Age of Discovery talk.
