Day 2

Cologne’s Christmas Markets

Today you are free to enjoy a relaxing day exploring Cologne's many varied Christmas Markets. A short wander from our hotel brings you to the Old Town's narrow alleys and squares, and the Christmas Market at the Alter Markt. On the cathedral's doorstep is the Christmas Market at the Dom, which features the largest Christmas tree in the Rhineland and as many as 160 decorated stalls. Also within walking distance of our hotel is Neumarkt, which hosts the oldest Christmas Market in Cologne, now themed as the 'Market of Angels'. The Rudolfplatz Christmas Market, found on the Hahnentor, one of Cologne's old city gates, has a fairytale theme. The Maritime Christmas Market next to the Rhine adds to the city's impressive collection of Christmas Markets, which has made Cologne the unofficial 'Christmas Markets capital of Europe'. During your time in this part of the city, you can also admire the tall and narrow pastel-coloured houses set out along the winding streets. There are many traditional brewery taverns close to the Old Town, all of which serve Kölsch beer - unique to Cologne. You may wish to visit at least one of these to sample this specialty for yourself.

Day 3

Wuppertal Christmas Market and The Kaiserwagen

A short ride away by regional train (Standard Class) is Wuppertal, whose two Christmas Markets are connected by the city's unique "Schwebebahn", a suspended railway dating from the turn of the last century. Kaiser Wilhelm II famously travelled on the line in 1900 before the "steel centipede" was opened to the general public. During the day we include a journey on the nostalgic "Kaiserwagen", the carriage which swept the emperor above the Wupper Valley in 1900, with coffee and cake provided on board.
