We enjoy a relaxed start to Day 2, with time to explore the lovely city of Turin. Later we board the high-speed train to Rome, arriving in the early evening. We spend two nights at the Hotel President.

On Day 3 we enjoy a guided tour of Rome, exploring some of the many fantastic sights and monuments, including the incredible Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the legendary Trevi Fountain. Your afternoon is free to continue discovering Rome.

Day 4

To Calabria

This morning we board the direct high-speed train to Calabria, enjoying stunning views out across the rugged coastline as we trace the shoreline to Lamezia Terme. Here we board a private coach to transfer to Tropea. As we wind gently along the coastline, the route affords us glorious vistas out over the sparkling Mediterranean. The town of Tropea is built on a headland looking out towards the volcanic island of Stromboli, and the old town is a maze of alleyways and buildings that edge up to the steep, soaring cliffs. As empires were built and destroyed, so were the buildings in Tropea - 18th century palaces jostle for position with medieval houses that survived, the more recent structures standing on the foundations of the buildings they replaced. The town has a peaceful, spell-binding charm - there are no ancient ruins; instead, this is an ancient town living in the present. From the cliff tops you can descend staircases cut into the cliff face, each leading down to one of several white sandy beaches, all within easy walking distance of the town centre. We spend the next seven nights in Tropea at the Tropis Hotel.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5

Exploring Tropea

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Tropea, which introduces us to some of the main sights and attractions. Following the tour, you are free to spend the rest of the day exploring at your leisure, possibly by visiting the historic centre and the charms which lie within. These include the beautiful Duomo, the magical twisting lanes and hidden town squares and the wonderful 'trattorie', or restaurants, that you'll find on almost every street corner.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
  • Tour of Tropea
Day 6

Gerace and Stilo

Today we cross the promontory, from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea, where we visit Gerace, a beautiful medieval town perched on the top of a 500 metre-long rock. Locals describe the city as 'the Florence of the South'. It is easy to see why; Gerace was once home to as many as 128 churches, grand palaces, cobblestone streets and beautiful, secluded squares. We enjoy a guided tour of Gerace and time to discover its many charms at leisure, before heading into the countryside to enjoy a rustic Italian lunch created from local ingredients. This afternoon we continue to Stilo, a town which spreads across the lower slopes of Monte Consolino - a rocky hill which rises dramatically out of the ground.

Here we visit La Cattolica, a pretty Greek-style redbrick church built on the hill above the city. Once, the interior walls were covered in frescoes - today the faded paintings are well worth seeing close up.

  • Tour of Gerace
  • La Cattolica in Stilo

Day 7

At leisure

Today you are free to relax in Tropea or to explore the region at leisure.

Day 8

Serra San Bruno and Pizzo

This morning we travel into the rich forests at the centre of the peninsula, to the small town of Serra San Bruno - 'St Bruno's Greenhouse'. The town developed alongside La Certosa di Serra San Bruno, a beautiful Carthusian monastery hidden in the forests just out of town. We enjoy a guided tour of part of the monastery complex before pausing for a rustic lunch. We then enjoy time to explore Serra San Bruno itself. Later today we travel to Pizzo, a charming medieval town built on the cliffs and hillsides above the Tyrrhenian Sea.

One of the hidden gems of the Calabrian coastline, Pizzo is a traditional fishing village with pastel-painted, red-roofed houses jostling for position on the cliffs and hills above the sea. The town is famous for its classic dessert, Tartufo - a ball of ice cream filled with molten chocolate. We visit Pizzo's Aragonese castle on our guided tour, plus the Church of Piedigrotta, which was built into the rock face, as legend has it, by sailors saved from a watery grave.

  • Breakfast, Lunch
  • Tour of Serra San Bruno
  • Tour of Aragonese castle
  • Church of Piedigrotta
Day 9

Stromboli by night*

You are free to relax in Tropea until the early afternoon, when we board a boat from Tropea port, sailing out to Stromboli*, an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea which is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The volcano, which is fringed by a black sand beach and rises 8,000 feet from the sea bed, is thought to have been erupting almost continually for at least 2,000 years, providing an incredible, natural pyrotechnics show. We land on Stromboli, where you have time to wander through the main town and to enjoy dinner.

Then we return to the boat to witness the eruptions by night, the most spectacular time to see the incredible fiery bursts.

* This excursion is dependent on weather conditions. In the unlikely event that we are unable to sail to Stromboli, an alternative excursion will be organised.

  • Cruise to Stromboli
