Phill JacksonTour Managers Manager
August 2006What I do
Manage the 300 strong team of Tour Managers (TMs) for Great Rail Journeys and Treyn. I recruit and train new TMs, allocate TMs to tours, performance management of TMs. I also lead a small team in the offices who 'look after' the TMs from organising their hotel and travel, to pay and other personnel issues. I am also responsible for ongoing training and coaching within the TM team, strategy and policy as well as support for TMs both on and off tour.Biography
Having started my working life as a telegram boy at the age of 15, I progressed within Royal Mail performing a variety of roles over a career spanning 23 years. On leaving Royal Mail I bought and ran a small hotel in Scarborough and subsequently a café bar in the centre of York. In my spare time I am a member of the York Light Opera Company, and I have two nearly grown up children.Favourite rail journey
I think my favourite has to be the Jungfrau Express in Switzerland. It is stunning, especially in winter when I visited. Travelling up to Europe's highest railway station is a journey which should not be missed.Favourite GRJ tour
This is a difficult one. I do like Italy, especially the Highlights of Tuscany tour which I led. It visits great cities such as Florence, Siena and Pisa but has enough time to explore the region and see some of the Tuscan countryside. I also really like the Italian lakes. Of course, there is Yorkshire - who could not have this great county on their list of favourite tours?Top traveller tips
This is the same advice all my Tour Managers would give to any passenger: pack light. You will have to transport your luggage at least on and off trains, make sure you can manage it!
My other tip is to make sure passengers appreciate all the rail journeys; they are a part of the holiday.
