The Pride of Africa offers unparalleled luxury and elegance, which recaptures the romance of the golden age of rail travel, whilst offering all the amenities one would expect from a 5-star hotel. Rohan Vos, the founder of Rovos Rail who own and operate the Pride of Africa, lovingly restored the carriages and steam locomotive which pulls us on the final leg of our journey.
Dining on board
The Pride of Africa's elegant Dining Cars - many of which are pre-1940s - have been beautifully restored and offer passengers a refined setting in which to enjoy on-board meals. A team of chefs use fresh, local ingredients to create a menu of authentic, regional cuisine, which is accompanied by a selection of fine South African Wines. Whilst dress during the day is smart casual, dinner is more formal, with gentleman expected to wear a jacket and tie and ladies a cocktail/evening dress or a suit.
The Pride of Africa features an air conditioned non-smoking lounge car filled with comfortable chairs and sofas in which passengers can relax and enjoy the passing scenery. The train also has a Club Car which provides a public area for smokers. The Observation Car is found at the very end of the train and has enlarged windows and an open-air balcony, providing passengers with yet another area in which to socialise with fellow passengers and enjoy the sights of Africa.
The suites on board the Pride of Africa are the epitome of luxury. We include accommodation in the Pullman Suites (7 sq metres), which are equipped with a comfortable sofa by day, which converts to double or twin beds at night. The cabins are air conditioned and feature an en suite bathroom with shower, shaver plug and hairdryer. There is also a writing table, personal safe for valuables and a bar fridge filled with beverages of the passengers' choice. Room service is available 24 hours a day. See slides 12 and 13 for layouts of the cabin during the day and at night, plus photographs of the various interiors.
The train stops around midnight every evening for six hours to provide a peaceful atmosphere for you to enjoy a good night's sleep.
Upgrades to Deluxe Suites are available on board the Pride of Africa. Deluxe Suites come with all the same facilities as the Pullman Suites but at 11 sq metres, they are slightly larger and include a lounge area. See slides 14 and 15 for the layout of both the twin and double cabins as well as photographs of the interior.
The spacious and elegant Royal Suites, each take up half a carriage and offer 16 sq metres of living space. Each Royal Suite comes with either a double or twin beds, their own private lounge area and a full en suite bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower. See slide 16 for the cabin layout and a photograph of the interior.
