Scottish Highlands Tours

The wild and rugged beauty of the Highlands of northern Scotland has inspired artists for centuries, its dramatic imagery gracing countless postcards and shortbread tins. Explore the Scottish Highlands with Great Rail Journeys and you'll discover some of the most magical, picturesque and unspoilt landscapes in the British Isles.

Our Scottish Highlands tours offer varied and exciting itineraries; one moment you could be sweeping through the breathtakingly majestic scenery of the mountain glens of Glenfinnan on an iconic steam train, and the next be visiting the fairy-tale perfect Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed locations in Scotland thanks to its superb setting on an island in Loch Duich.

Whilst large areas of the Scottish Highlands are wild, open and uninhabited, traversed only by remote roads and scenic railway lines, the region is also dotted with charming and picturesque villages, interesting towns, ancient castles such as Dunrobin Castle near the town of Beuly, and a host of distilleries, each with its own history and characteristics, which produce Scotland's most famous export: malt whisky.

When you explore the Scottish Highlands on one of our tours you'll have free time to seek out these highlights of Scotland and many more as you journey through a region rich in tradition, culture, history and sublime beauty.

“An enjoyable tour of a beautiful area. This would have been 5 star but the pace was quite rushed and there were a lot of long coach journeys. Unfortunately there were late changes to the hotels and I only had one night out of eight as originally booked. The biggest change was to move from the Royal Mile at the centre of Edinburgh to Haymarket a mile and a half away. I was only informed of the changes when I received the receipt for my final payment. I have travelled many times with GRJ and not had any problems before but the lack of communication and substitution of inferior hotels have made me reluctant to book again.

“The holiday was very enjoyable, the hotel was comfortable, the staff pleasant and helpful. The flight of stone steps leading to the hotel entrance was challenging for elderly visitors with luggage. Our friendly tour manager Atha was a mine of information and useful tips and kept us on track. Visits to the Commando Memorial, Eileen Donan Castle and the Culloden Battlefield Tour were well worthwhile. It was disappointing that we did not have enough time in Mallaig and no time in Fort William due to the railway timetable. There was more coach travel than expected but Scotland’s countryside bright with gorse and broom and costal scenic views were beautiful.

“We would have marked this trip higher but for one of the advertised highlights of the tour, one of the Great Rail Journeys of the world, the Rail trip from Fort William to Mallaig did not take place. The famous train trip was not listed at all on tour notes given to us by our tour leader on the first evening of our trip despite being part of the advertised itinerary. No real explanation was given why were taken by coach to Mallaig for the ferry instead of the train trip. The tour manger said she thought Scotrail had cancelled the train, but I checked, and it was booked to run as normal. We were looking forward to this world class rail journey including the trip over the Glenfinnan Viaduct with its Harry Potter connections. I must admit that day seemed to turn in to 'Great Coach Journeys of the World' rather the Great Train Journeys. I email the company on return and received an automated reply that one of the team would get back to me within 28 days. No reply as yet. (Not so good customer care.) We have used this company before without problem. Putting the above to one side We enjoyed the rest of trip throughout, first class tour manager, guides and drivers. Cannot fault the hotels or food.

Great Rail Journeys offers a selection of tours which explore different aspects and areas of the Highlands of Scotland. A tour of the western Highlands reveals Scotland's rugged coastline, as well as wild inland areas such as the remote Rannoch Moor which, in the absence of roads, can only be crossed by train. The western Highlands, back-dropped by dramatically scenic mountain ranges is a region of legend - on this tour you'll visit Loch Ness, home of the infamous monster - and of legendary beauty in the form of the wildlife-rich Hebrides and Small Islands, Fort William and Ben Nevis; the highest mountain in the British Isles.

Some of the UK's most scenic railways are to be found in the Scottish Highlands and when you taking a Highland Adventure with Great Rail Journeys offers the chance to travel on the Strathspey Steam Railway, the Jacobite Steam Train and the Cairngorm Mountain Railway; Scotland's only funicular railway which gently ascends to give superb views of the Cairngorm range and the popular Highland resort of Aviemore.

There can be few more enjoyable ways of enjoying Scotland's unique scenery, remarkable railways and historic heritage than by exploring the Scottish Highlands with Great Rail Journeys.
