To gain both a marvellous overview and a great insight into the lakes and mountains of Austria, on our holidays we explore the region on a number of varied excursions. For example, on our "Austrian Lake District" tour we stay in the quiet, authentic fishing community of Traunkirchen, set on the western edge of Lake Traunsee and overlooked by the Traunstein Mountain.
We visit some of the impossibly pretty villages dotted around these lakes, including St. Wolfgang and Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other excursions take in some of the film locations for "The Sound of Music", and the timeless city of Salzburg - known as Mozart's birthplace and filled with a plethora of attractions. And of course, we discover some of the lakes by taking leisurely cruises on them.
We also include some exciting railway trips. Some of these scenic lines pass along the lake shores, connecting the region's charming towns on modern routes. Others, such as the Schafbergbahn Cog Railway, are preserved tourist lines. This steam-hauled journey offers incredible views over the Austrian lakes and mountains as it climbs to the summit of Schafberg at 3,904 feet.
