Escorted Rail Tours to Volendam
Famous for its traditional Dutch costume
The town of Volendam, sometimes called "the pearl of the Zuiderzee", offers a fascinating insight into Dutch history. The town is best known for the traditional costumes and wooden shoes worn by locals. The oldest part of the centre is sometimes called "the labyrinth", for its narrow streets and seemingly random plan.
Due to the town's isolated location, and the character of its inhabitants, Volendam has an unusual atmosphere. Originally a small fishing village with a bustling harbour, Volendam became popular with artists during the 1880s, attracted by the unspoilt town that seemed trapped in the past. These artists captured Volendam's characteristics in paintings and other works of art.
The traditional costumes are some of the best examples of ancient clothing in Holland, and although only a handful of people wear it in their daily lives today, the locals understand the value of the costumes for tourism, so it is likely that you will see many examples as you wander through the town.
