Escorted Rail Tours to Otranto

Picturesque Mediterranean scenery by the sea

Lying at the most easterly point of Italy's mainland, the charming town of Otranto boasts an attractive, car-free historic centre within its 15th century walls. This beautiful fishing community has some truly splendid monuments to its Greek, Byzantine and Sicilian Norman past. Each of these groups saw the strategic importance of a port that made for quick crossings to other European territories, ensuring Otranto always prospered.

More about Otranto

The Castle of Otranto
Due to its proximity to the Ottoman Empire, the town saw one of its darkest moments in 1480, when 800 Christians were massacred here by the Turks. The town's Martyrs' Chapel is a fitting site for their final resting place. Otranto's castle was built shortly afterwards in response to the attack, and its unusual shape has since made it a popular icon of the town's skyline. Otranto has long since expanded beyond its walls, and today the town is a lovely seaside resort, with a small fishing harbour, a palm tree lined promenade and a choice of beautiful white sandy beaches.
