Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Marble Mountains were given their
name because they were known to contain marble - though they
consist mainly of limestone. Each of the five mountains is named
after the five 'elements': Earth, Water, Fire, Wood and Metal.
Offering wonderful views over the surrounding region near Danang,
there are various cave entrances and a number of tunnels running
through the mountains, as well as a selection of Buddhist
sanctuaries - which have ensured a sense of mystique has prevailed
over this special location. Until relatively recently, the
mountains were being mined for their marble, but moves have since
been taken to preserve them and this is no longer allowed.
