Vibrant and bustling, Cai Be's floating market has been a
standard tradition of the Mekong Delta region for centuries. With
the landscape offering obvious challenges - and often with seasons
of flooding - standing markets could never be held regularly.
Instead, it was decided that markets could just be held full-time
on floating craft, as even in drier seasons a market could still
take place continually.
Nowadays, very little has changed from the initial floating
markets; everyone from wholesalers to small traders comes here,
most specialising in just a few types of fruit or vegetables.
Customers generally browse these unusual stalls in smaller boats,
taking in the sights and sounds of this incredible place as the
trading boats display their goods on a choice of wooden poles.
