b'NEW YORK AMERICA COAST TO COAST|YOUR ITINERARYDays 1-2 - To New YorkWe fly to New York City, one of the USAs most lively cities. We spend two nights here; the perfect introduction to the vibrant culture of the United States. On Day 2 were introduced to the Big Apple on a guided tour, seeing Central Park, the open, leafy space set amongst the citys glittering skyscrapers. We continue with a sightseeing cruise around iconic Manhattan Harbour, spotting landmarks from our unique vantage point on the water including Ellis Island and the torch-wielding icon, the Statue of Liberty herself.Days 3-4 - To Washington D.C. Boarding a train south, we travel to the nations capital and political powerhouse, Washington D.C. We spend two nights here, immersing CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR ourselves in the countrys fascinating political history. Later, we head out on a guided tour that takes in many famous landmarks. We see the White House, the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. We also visit Capitol Hill - the seat of the U.S. government, and Georgetown, a historic cobblestoned neighbourhood. On Day 4, youre free to explore the city at your own pace.Days 5-7 - To the Mid-West and ChicagoWe leave the capital on Amtraks Capitol Limited service. The service runs daily to Chicago, following a historic route through the Potomac Valley. We arrive in Chicago on Day 6. Known as the Windy City, Chicago is set on the sea-like shores of Lake Michigan. We take a city tour that revisits the dry and lawless years of the 20s and 30s. We take in the site of the St Valentines Day Massacre as well as Al Capones headquarters, Willis Tower and Millennium Park. Youre free to explore on Day 7. You could climb the 110-storey Willis Tower. On a clear day, from the observation deck, its possible to see views stretching across four states - Illinois, LAS VEGAS Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana. Days 8-10 - The Great Plains and Heritage American railWe board the California Zephyr for an overnight journey to Grand Junction across the cornfields and plains of Iowa and Nebraska. The Zephyr has a Sightseer Lounge, where we can enjoy the views. We arrive in Grand Junction on Day 9. We spend the night here, and the rest of the day is free. You could explore Main Street, where the atmosphere is distinctly small-town America, with pleasant cafs and restaurants, and characterful gift shops. On Day 10, we make our way to Silverton for a journey on the Durango & Silverton Railroad. This is a wonderfully nostalgic rail journey, taking us back in time to the Wild West era. We travel through breathtaking canyons, past emerald-green rivers, and across the remote wilderness of the National Forest, finally arriving in Durango, where we spend the night.GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE Days 11-12 - Monument Valley, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon After breakfast, we depart Durango. Familiar from a hundred westerns, the rugged landscape of Utahs Monument Valley is one of Americas defining images, and we discover it we pass through en-route to Flagstaff. On Day 12, we head along the legendary Route 66 to Williams, where we join the Grand Canyon Railway. We travel in carriages hauled by historic locomotives on our way to one of the worlds most awe-inspiring sights, the Grand Canyon. Created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. We arrive at the South Rim and the main viewpoint of the Canyon, where the views are breathtaking. Days 13-14 - Las Vegas and Los Angeles Travelling along iconic Route 66, we make our way to Las Vegas, a city synonymous with glitz and glamour, famed for its neon lights, casinos 66 USA'
