World's best sleeper trains

For many, the idea of traveling aboard a night train holds a mysterious allure, conjuring images of a mustachioed Hercule Poirot aboard the Orient Express.  For others, sleeper trains are an adventure, a chance to take a step back in time while being rocked to sleep by the sound of the tracks and waking up in an entirely different destination.  But all can agree that there is nothing quite like the romance of traveling on a sleeper train, and we're excited share our picks for the world's best sleeper trains.

Caledonian Sleeper

London to Fort William

Starting in the UK, we have the Caledonian Sleeper, which will whisk you from London Euston to the depths of the Scottish Highlands in just over thirteen hours. The further you travel, the more the cities and towns thin to reveal the glorious British countryside and eventually, the rugged and dramatic landscape of Scotland.  And if you decide to grab a bite to eat before you hit the hay, you'll be able to enjoy a menu chock-full of Scottish specialties and a bar well-stocked with whiskies that make for the perfect nightcap.

Lusitania Sleeper

Lisbon to San Sebastian

Douro River, Spain

Lisbon is at the top of many traveler's European vacation wish lists right now, and for a good reason; its renovated palaces, vibrant culture, incredible food scene, temperate climate, magnificent churches, impressive castle…we could go on and on! Lasting for eleven hours, you can book a gran clase sleeper cabin, to ensure the best nights' sleep possible, which comes with your own toilet, shower, toiletries and complimentary bottled water. A visit to the café bar won't disappoint either. They often sell local wines at a fraction of what we're used to - we recommend some Portuguese vinho verde (green wine) whose name derives from the age of the grape used and is only produced in Portugal.

Blue Train

Pretoria to Cape Town

A favorite with kings, presidents and celebrities, the Blue Train lives up to its reputation for magnificence and splendor.  Making the spectacular nearly 1000-mile journey across South Africa from Pretoria to Cape Town, the Blue Train was designed so passengers could discover the magic of this stunning African nation in comfort, luxury and style. The Blue Train harks all the way back to the 1920s and started as two separate trains, known as the Union Limited and the Union Express. With the South African gold and diamond boom, the wealthy visitors came to expect a higher level of rail travel and consequently, the two were turned into what is now called the Blue Train, named after the royal blues of the engines.  Your journey will take you past the Zambezi river and the glorious Victoria Falls, with views of the savannah and Karoo desert along the way.  Luxury suites come complete with incredible accommodations, like full-sized bathtubs, mahogany wall panels, and a full entertainment system.
