An spectacular cruise along the beautiful Rhine
Step aboard the wonderful A-Rosa Aqua and enjoy an enthralling and relaxing cruise. From Cologne to Basel, cruise the length of Germany along the romantic River Rhine, explore fine medieval towns, admire castles perched dramatically above the river, and relax on board.
Meet your group and Tour Manager at our St Pancras Departure Office, we board the Eurostar service to Brussels, continuing on to Cologne. On arrival into Cologne, we board our ship, the A-Rosa Aqua and are welcomed by the captain and crew with a welcome drink and dinner. This evening, we set off for Mainz.
We arrive in historic Mainz this morning. The capital of the Rhineland province, Mainz is an attractive collection of traditional half-timbered German houses, regal Romantic buildings and open squares. Famously, the modern printing press was invented here by Johannes Gutenberg. There is the chance to join an optional walking tour around the city, with included entry to the Gutenberg Museum.
Today we pass through the cities of Kehl and Strasbourg, one of which lies in Germany and the other in France. Mooring up on the German side of the shoreline, there is an optional excursion into Strasbourg for a guided tour. An enigmatic mix of French and German culture.
Strasbourg is a delight to explore. Lining the river are rows of pastel-coloured, slightly askew houses which look over the water, dropping a splash of colour into the reflection and lending a quaint feel to the waterways and canals. Strasbourg's centrepiece is the everimpressive Gothic cathedral with its magnificent stainedglass windows. Once the tallest building in the world, the cathedral also houses one of the world's largest astronomical clocks, which is considered unusually accurate for its age.
Today is at leisure for you to explore either Kehl or Strasbourg at your own pace. While Kehl perhaps has less to offer than its larger, more metropolitan neighbour, the relaxed and laid-back atmosphere provides a different feel. Why not take a stroll along the river, or perhaps walk across the impressive Passerelle Mimram bridge.
We arrive in the Swiss city of Basel today. Here, you have the choice between exploring at leisure or joining a guided tour around the many attractions and cultural landmarks. A popular university city, Basel enjoys a vibrant atmosphere to complement the attractive open areas and colourful houses. Around 40 museums can be found here detailing everything from Swiss culture to artistic metallurgy, leaving you with near-endless choices for how to spend your time in this remarkable Swiss town.
This morning we arrive in Breisach, a fortified hill town at the Rhine's edge. On the outskirts of the Black Forest, Breisach enjoys a location of astonishing beauty, bordering both the mighty forest and the gentle Rhine. With its beautiful tree lined streets and its tawny architecture, Breisach looks fantastic, oozing history and rustic elegance at each corner.
One highlight here is the Breisacher Fahrgast Schiffahrt church. While it does require a short hike up a hill, the church offers magnificent views across the city and the Rhine and further away into the Black Forest itself. During your time here, you could join an optional walking tour of Breisach. After the walk, there is a chance to taste some of the region's produce and a delicious selection of local sparkling wines.
Having passed through the famous Rhine Gorge, we arrive in Koblenz this afternoon. As traditional a German town as you could wish for, Koblenz has much to offer in the shape of pretty scenery, majestic monuments and labyrinthine alleys which lead to the town's fascinating array of Romantic buildings and reverent churches.
You have time here to enjoy at leisure, or, you may wish to take an optional guided tour to see all the historic attractions in this wonderful city.
We disembark the ship after breakfast in Cologne, transferring to the railway station, for our direct train to Brussels, where we join the Eurostar back to London St Pancras, on arrival your tour concludes.
