Situated in the beautiful Rhine Gorge - a UNESCO World Heritage site - the pretty town of St Goarshausen is a popular tourist attraction. Historically the town was a busy fishing port, as well as a popular winemaking centre.
Still surrounded by lush vineyards, St Goarshausen continues to produce famous wines, though nowadays there are many more tourist vessels to be seen than fishing ones. With much to recommend it, it is hardly surprising that St Goarshausen is one of the most popular towns in the Rhine Gorge, and continues to delight visitors from all over the world.
One of St Goarshausen's most famous attractions is the nearby Lorelei Rock. This famous outcrop is where, according to legend, a blonde woman used to sit combing her hair while she lured sailors to their doom with her alluring song. The rock is an impressive stand out in the picturesque Rhine Gorge, and as such it attracts many visitors all year round.
Another highlight is Burg Katz (Cat Castle), which stands above the town overlooking the river. This 14th century fortress was built by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen to dwarf the Archbishop of Trier's castle a few miles downstream, and remains a great place to explore.
