The jewel in Hanover's crown

Sometimes known as "the jewel in Hanover's crown", Herrenhausen Gardens are the city's most famous attraction, and have been a major highlight for almost three centuries.

More about Herrenhausen Gardens

The first of the four gardens was originally designed at the request of Princess Sofia, who commissioned landscape artists to create a Baroque masterpiece for the grounds of Herrenhausen Castle. Starting from an initially simple design, over the course of fifty years the Great Garden was enhanced further - transforming it into a spectacular showpiece with elements of classic garden design from all over Europe. It now boasts a number of impressive water features (such as the 70-metre tall Great Fountain) and detailed sculptures, along with many rare plants and sculpted hedgerows. Although the castle was badly damaged in the Second World War, it has since been lovingly and painstakingly restored, complete with its original neoclassical façade.

At the same time as the Great Garden was being enhanced, the other three gardens were being created. These are the George Garden, the botanical Berg Garden and the Welfen Garden - which is now within the university grounds. Spread out across the city, the four gardens are linked by a pleasant tree-lined walk, and taken together the complex has rightly become one of Germany's best-loved gardens.
