Escorted Rail Tours to Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

Baby elephant walk

Established in 1975 to care for young abandoned elephants, the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is now one of the largest elephant enclosures in the world.

When the organisation first came into being, just five baby elephants lived in the grounds on the banks of the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was naturally very popular with tourists, but it also proved to be successful at rearing the elephants.

Having introduced a breeding programme in the early 1980s, Pinnawela now has the world's largest captive elephant herd - more than 80 of which were born at the facility.

The enclosure has been commended by animal welfare campaigners in Sri Lanka, and as a result it has remained very popular with locals and tourists alike.
