Darwin - Alice Springs - Adelaide on The Ghan

For over 80 years, The Ghan has been the ultimate way to travel through the very heart of Australia. Named after the Afghan drivers of the camel 'trains', the first supply link to Alice Springs, The Ghan is a mode of transport, a sightseeing trip, a hotel and an Australian legend all in one!

For many years the line ran from Adelaide only as far as Alice Springs. The Darwin-Alice link finally opened in 2004, completing one of the greatest rail journeys in the world. Today The Ghan's full route is an epic 1,852-mile (2,979km) rail journey between Darwin and Adelaide.

For most of our tours, Alice Springs is the starting point of our adventure. As the train leaves this famous Outback town, The Ghan continues its journey through the Red Centre with its wild, remote landscape of red earth contrasting with the deep, blue skies. The scenery outside the window changes gradually from desert to the magnificent, rugged mountains of the Finders Ranges and then the fertile wine-growing region of the Adelaide Plains. After 19 hours The Ghan reaches Adelaide, the capital of South Australia and journey's end.
