York Minster
Day 1

Meet in York and a guided tour of York

Your tour begins in York, as you meet your Tour Manager at the Holiday Inn. This afternoon we take a guided tour of the ancient city, admiring its abundance of Roman and Tudor buildings, as well as the famous, remarkably unchanged Medieval Shambles street and the magnificent Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe.

Castle Howard
Days 2-3

Castle Howard, Saltaire & Yorkshire Dales

Today we visit the lavish Castle Howard. The impressive house has been home to the Howard family for 300 years and is famous from 'Brideshead Revisited'. After time to explore the house and beautiful gardens, we return to York for an afternoon at leisure. On Day 3 we travel by coach to Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for a guided tour of the preserved Victorian village. We also visit Salts Mill, home to a permanent exhibition by the famous local artist David Hockney. Later we join the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, enjoying the Dales scenery as we travel to Bolton Abbey. Here you enjoy some free time to explore the ruined 12th century priory.

Day 4

The Settle & Carlisle Line

Leaving York, we travel via Leeds to join the famous Settle & Carlisle Line - a route often voted one of the world's top railway journeys. We climb quickly into the undulating landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, then continue into Cumbria and through the lush Eden Valley before arriving in Carlisle. From here we transfer to the Lake District for three nights at the Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Bowness.

Lake Windermere
Days 5-6

Exploring the spectacular Lake District

This morning we travel to Haverthwaite, where we board the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway to Lakeside on Windermere's shore. Here we take to the water, enjoying a steamer cruise across the lake to Bowness. Your afternoon is then at leisure. On Day 6 we enjoy a '10 Lakes Spectacular' excursion by minibus, covering Ullswater, Buttermere, and Borrowdale. Magnificent scenery of mountains, valleys and lakes awaits us, as we travel over high passes, through dramatic valleys and past cascading waterfalls. The tour also includes a lake cruise and a visit to the Castlerigg Stone Circle.

Day 7

Homeward bound

We transfer to Lancaster for the train to Leeds, then continue to York where the tour concludes.
