Day 1 Washington DC
Washington DC

London to Washington D.C.

Our tour begins with a flight from London Heathrow to Washington D.C., the capital of the United States. Arguably one of the USA's most historic and political cities, Washington D.C. has overseen monumental speeches, heinous scandals and the passing of hugely signifi cant laws. The centrepiece of this fascinating city is the National Mall which stretches over 1.9 miles. This enormous national park is home to a number of different museums based on American history as well as several iconic monuments and memorials. On arrival, we check into the Fairfax Embassy Row, located near the famous Dupont Circle in the OId City of Washington.

Day 2 Washington DC
Washington DC

Exploring Washington D.C.

Today, we begin our explorations with a city tour, taking in the main highlights which make up the most important buildings of the US government, including Capitol Hill, the largest historical residential district in Washington and instantly recognisable thanks to the distinctive Capitol Building. We also take in the Pentagon, the Washington Memorial and the grandiose White House, home of the President of the United States.

Day 3 Washington DC, Lincoln Memorial
Washington DC, Lincoln Memorial

At leisure in Washington

Your day is free for you to continue exploring the city at leisure. A popular attraction here in Washington D.C. is the incredible Smithsonian Institution. Made up of 19 museums and galleries as well as research centres and the national zoo, this complex is one of the largest of its kind. You may also wish to visit the striking Lincoln Memorial found at the end of the National Mall, a large temple structure housing a marble statue of the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, who oversaw the abolition of slavery in the United States in the 19th century.

Day 4 New York
New York

Exploring New York

This morning we embark on our first Amtrak trip of the holiday, as we make our way to New York. Arguably the most recognisable of the American cities, New York is an eruption of sounds, sights and smells from each of the diverse cultures which call this megalopolis home. Much of the five boroughs enjoy their own identity, making this one of the most enthralling cities not only in the USA but across the world. On arrival we take a sightseeing tour of the city, visiting 'Big Apple' icons including the dazzling Fifth Avenue, famous for its wealth of high end shops and regal buildings. We also visit the oasis of Central Park, which offers a tranquil haven to recuperate from the hustle and speed of the 'city that never sleeps'. Later, we check into the New York Marriott East Side Hotel.

Your evening is free; perhaps use this opportunity to catch a Broadway show in the nearby Theater District, for typical New York entertainment. These performances often feature big names in show business and are recognised as some of the best shows in the global performing arts industry. Of course, most of the shows are in theatres just off Times Square, which is a bright and vibrant must-see at night.

Day 5 Statue Of Liberty, New York
Statue Of Liberty, New York

Free time in the Big Apple

Today is free for you to explore this wonderful city further at your own pace. Your options are virtually endless as New York offers something for everyone. New York's neighbourhoods, including Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, East Village, the West Side and Harlem, all take on a unique character of their own, but remain quintessentially 'New York'. Enrich your mind at one of the many museums, such as the Guggenheim, American Museum of Natural History, or the Museum of Modern Art or simply take a break in a New York café where you can sit back and watch the bustling New York street life.

Perhaps venture to the Chelsea neighbourhood in downtown Manhattan. Here you will find the incredible Chelsea Market - an fabulous variety of restaurants, cafes, and food shops all in a charmingly bohemian setting. From here, it is also very easy to get to the High Line park - a strip of greenery that runs through the west side of New York using disused subway lines. There are a myriad of viewpoints of the city along the route, as well as a number of art installations.

Day 6 Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

We leave the bustle of New York behind today, as we board Amtrak's Empire service to Buffalo. From here, we transfer by coach to Niagara, crossing the border into Canada enroute, where we check into our hotel. With free time here, this is the perfect opportunity to witness the spectacular Niagara Falls from a different country - often regarded as the more picturesque view, and a popular vantage-point for photographers. The three falls make for a magnificent sight as the azure waters crash into the river below and the constant rush of water produces a thundering cacophony of sound.

Day 7 Toronto

Today, we begin our journey to Toronto, pausing at Niagara-on-the-Lake. On arrival in Toronto, we take a guided city tour. The city is a multicultural melting-pot with an inviting, laid-back atmosphere. Once called York, Toronto has traded hands a number of times throughout history, once as a settlement by the Iroquois and as a French trading post. Thanks to its diverse history and huge immigration over the last two centuries, Toronto is seen as one of the most global and international cities in Northern America. Our guided tour takes us to view some of the city's most famous landmarks including the enormous CN Tower and the immense Rogers Centre sports arena (entrance not included).

Day 8 Toronto Skyline
Toronto Skyline

At leisure in Toronto

Enjoy free time to explore at your own pace. Unlike many other cities of the same or similar size, Toronto enjoys a relaxed and quintessentially Canadian feel and boasts a wealth of things to see and do. Perhaps ascend the CN Tower to enjoy unparalleled views across the city and surrounding area. Or alternatively, you may wish to take a cruise along the harbour, allowing you to take in the shimmering Toronto skyline and the busy harbour (payable locally).
