Our base in the Tyrol, Jenbach, is ideal for yuletide trips to Salzburg, Innsbruck and the Achensee. The narrow-gauge steam railway, the Zillertalbahn, is a real highlight, as it winds its way up the valley to the winter resort of Mayrhofen.

(Day 1-D; Day 2-B,D; Day 3-B,D)
On New Year's Eve we travel along the Ziller Valley on the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn Railway, with restored four-wheel carriages hauled by a vintage steam engine. We travel to Mayrhofen at the head of the valley and you have time to explore or take a cable car into the mountains. In the evening we enjoy a sumptuous five-course dinner accompanied by champagne, music and fireworks at midnight. (B,D)
Today we head into the snow-covered mountains high above Jenbach to Achensee, the Tyrol's largest and deepest lake, 3,000 feet (914m) above sea level. We visit the charming town of Pertisau on the lake's western shores and enjoy a gentle horse-drawn sleigh ride into the forest. (B,D)
On Day 6 we visit the Tyrolean capital, Innsbruck, just a short train ride away. The city enjoys a spectacular location in the Inn Valley surrounded by lofty snow-capped peaks. Here you are free to discover its Christmas Market and stroll around the maze of cobbled alleyways in the medieval Old Town. Alternatively, make one of the many wonderful journeys into the beautiful surrounding countryside - the charming town of Igls is to be recommended. Day 7 is free for you to relax and explore the local surroundings. On Day 8 we enjoy an excursion by coach to Salzburg. A guided walking tour includes the Getreidegasse, the Residenz, and the city's Renaissance cathedral. (Day 6-B; Day 7-B,D; Day 8-B,D)
