Today is free for you to explore Trier, Germany's oldest city. The Porta Nigra, a Roman Gate now designated a World Heritage site, is well worth a visit and other options include the birthplace of Karl Marx, the Roman Baths and Amphitheatre and the stunning cathedral, Germany's oldest church. (B)
Today we take a coach to Bernkastel-Kues, the famous 700-year-old wine town. Bernkastel features a lovely market square adorned with fountains and surrounded by half-timbered houses, and we enjoy a cruise on the majestic Moselle River, a great way to admire the scenery. After the cruise, your time is free to explore this beautiful town and maybe sample the local Riesling, before we return to Trier by coach. (B,D)
Our excursion today takes us along the scenic banks of the Moselle River to the Rhine and through Andernach where we change trains for Kaiseresch, surrounded by the picturesque Eifel Mountains. Here we join the Eifelquerbahn Railway and enjoy a journey in restored rail buses from the 1960s, through the green pastures of the Eifel Mountains to Gerolstein. We return to the hotel by coach.
