Sojourn on the shores of delightful Lake Levico
Sojourn on the shores of delightful Lake Levico, on a rail tour
that soaks up a collection
of favourite Italian attractions. Explore incomparable Venice and stunning Lake Garda,
collect snapshots of the Dolomites as you travel through the mountains, and discover the
charms of Trento, on this unforgettable holiday.
Our journey begins at London St Pancras, where we meet at our dedicated Departure Office. From here we board the Eurostar to Paris, where we change trains for the high-speed TGV service to Turin. On arrival in this delightful Italian city, we are transferred to our hotel for the night. We enjoy our first dinner together this evening.
Your morning is free to spend in Turin. The collection of busy piazzas and iconic Baroque buildings are a delight to discover: be sure to visit one of Turin's famous coffee shops and watch the crowds go by. This afternoon, we continue by Standard Class rail via Verona to Trento, where we are met by a coach for our transfer to Levico Terme, our base by the sparkling waters of Lake Levico. Levico Terme is a quaint spa town, popularised in the 19th century for the suggested healing properties of its thermal waters, leading to a collection of pretty streets, delightful villas, and cycling trails that encircle the lake, providing cyclists with scenic views. Tonight we enjoy dinner in our hotel.
Our first Italian excursion sees us depart Levico for the day, as we explore another of Italy's great bodies of water: the Venice lagoon. After an early breakfast, we transfer by coach to the incomparable 'Floating City' of Venice, where we are met by a local guide for a tour of this breathtaking city. Starting at St Mark's Square, one of the most beautiful city squares in the world, our tour of Venice begins with the icons that surround us: the large open space is surrounded by the St Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, the Procurator's residence, the famous Sansoviniana Bookshop and the iconic bell tower, as well as the waters of the lagoon. Our walking tour of the city leads us around the narrow winding streets and small squares, delving in to some of Venice's main sights.
Your afternoon is free to explore at leisure - you could view the Bridge of Sighs, cross the famous Rialto Bridge, discover the historic Jewish Quarter or visit the magnificent domed 'Santa Maria della Salute' Church. You are also free for lunch - perhaps take advantage of one of the many waterside restaurants or cafés to sample local specialties as you watch the world fl oat by. Alternatively, you may choose to take a classic gondola ride through the city's famous canals, for a different perspective on Venice's stunning architecture (payable locally). Most gondolas seat six, and although the fare is often expensive, for many this is an iconic Venetian tradition that simply cannot be missed.
After an afternoon to discover the glory of Venice under your own steam, we return to our coach for the journey back to Lake Levico.
Following a long and exciting day in Venice, today is free for you to relax. Perhaps take a stroll around Lake Levico, soaking up the undeniable beauty of this tranquil region. Alternatively, perhaps lounge in the gardens of the hotel, from where you can appreciate views of the mountains.
Our excursion today takes us to Lake Garda, the largest of Italy's lakes, and one of the country's most popular destinations. A haven for travellers for centuries, it is estimated that 7% of all visitors to Italy make the effort to include Garda in their holiday plans, and it's not hard to see why: the lake boasts a collection of delightful ports of call along the shoreline from which to base a break, and scenic views to write home about.
Today we visit several of the villages that line the lake's shores, starting with Salò. Nestled beneath the rolling hills of Monte San Bartolomeo, the town's atmosphere is one of sleepy grandeur, its Liberty-style buildings harking back to the days of Venetian rule, yet its modern role blissfully unimportant: this is a place of peace and calm beauty. We have free time to explore Salò's historic centre, before departing by boat to the second town on our trip: stunning Sirmione. Situated on its own peninsula and surrounded on three sides by water, Sirmione is one of Lake Garda's most peaceful towns, which we discover during our leisure time here. The picturesque town is a joy to explore, and you have free time to soak up its historic charms and breathtaking waterfront views. Perhaps wander through the Old Town, to experience Sirmione's older architecture, including the imposing 13th century Rocca Scaligera - a castle set within its own moat.
Finally, we take our last boat ride of the day, transferring across the lake to Lazise, situated on the east shore of the lake, a town of medieval origin. Packed with character, Lazise benefi ts from a collection of pretty alleyways crammed with fascinating little shops and restaurants, as well as one of the only sand beaches on Lake Garda. You have free time to explore the quaint streets, or perhaps stroll along the beach, before we return to Levico by coach, arriving in time for dinner.
Today is free to unwind by Lake Levico. Levico Terme is a beautiful town, and one of its best features is the Levico Spa Park, considered one of the most important historic parks in the Trento region, and offering a picturesque spot for a stroll. Around 600 trees populate the thirteen hectares of parkland, alongside some 50,000 bulbs that bloom each spring. Designed by German landscape gardener Georg Ziehl in the 19th century, the well-maintained park is one of Levico Terme's best-loved attractions, providing a verdant outdoor space that is the pride and joy of the town.
Today our adventure takes us into the striking mountains that surround Lake Levico, as we explore the breathtaking mountain roads of the Dolomites. Be sure to pack your camera, for a scenic day of panoramic mountain views. Starting early this morning, our private coach takes us through the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys, on a winding road with 27 hair-pin bends and endless mountain vistas, which we pause to photograph at several points en-route.
At lunchtime, we stop at the Pordoi Pass, situated at an altitude of 7,522ft (2293m), where there is free time for you to arrange lunch, and perhaps even ascend the mountain via cable car (payable locally). Our return journey to Levico takes a different route in places, as we travel through the Sella Pass, where there is the chance for a photo stop (weather permitting). We then visit either Ortisei or Canazei, both delightful Southern Tyrolean villages typical of the region, where there is free time to explore. We arrive back at our hotel tonight in time for dinner.
Today we travel by coach to Trento, where we take a guided tour. We explore the town's preserved architecture, with buildings here spanning a range of eras, from the medieval period to 18th century. We also discover the history behind Trento's elegant townhouses and palatial residences, owned and maintained by the powerful families that once ruled the city. This afternoon, we return to Levico for some free time, followed by a farewell dinner together this evening.
We leave Lake Levico behind today, as we make our way home. We travel by rail via Verona and Turin to Chambéry, where we overnight. On Day 10, we complete our journey, travelling by rail to Paris, where we take the Eurostar back to the UK.
