Berlin, Dresden & Prague 2010
Rail tour of a selection of Europe's most historic cities
A journey of contrasts to three of Central Europe's most important cities, from Berlin's unique history to the splendid architecture of Prague, via the rebuilt and rejuvenated Dresden, basking in timeless fashion on the banks of the Elbe.

On a trip with so much variety it's difficult to pick out one particular feature as the highlight. However, near the top of my list of favourites are the Reichstag in Berlin and the Frauenkirche in Dresden. Whilst both have overtones of the Second World War, their respective rebuilding brings to mind a sense of achievement and unity for the future.
One feature particularly enjoyed by the whole group was the guided tour of Colditz Castle. It is best known as the Second World War prison from which the Germans claimed there was no escape. However, the ingenuity employed by some of the prisoners to prove that claim wrong is brought vividly to life.
The tour is particularly poignant as it is possible to contrast former communist cultures with the present-day freedoms we have always taken for granted. Due to the massive rebuilding programme in what was East Germany, it is difficult to imagine now how much it, and its inhabitants, must have suffered.
